• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Object Visibility Range/Radius

Regardingthe "visibility radius" of an object, I wondered if you have any idea how that is set in a model. I was trying to add a wind turbine model to a hillside and it would disappear about a mile away. A different model would never (maybe > 10 miles) disappear. And I finally found a model that would disappear about 5 miles away which was perfect - couldn't see it "pop" into view. I used MCX to write out the "source code" in the X format but I could never determine some line of data that could set the "visibility radius" - any ideas?

I think that the visibility have to do with the Lods, someone can explain better, only I have heard about, It's a property of the model, and this Lods make the object appear at certain distances.

I know you can tweak the ASM code to make things appear at different distances, but I'm in the dark otherwise...

Hi,

As far as I know you can't control the drawing distance. If you have LODs they will influence it and I think the size of the bounding box also has an influence.

So you could try to make the bounding box of the object bigger. That might have an influence. At the moment you would probably need a hexeditor for this, I will try to have a look if it works, then it should become part of a tool :).

Thanks for considering this issue. Personally, I want my FSX objects to be visible from a considerable distance (at least 10 miles) so I don't see any popping of the object into the scene. I don't think the the small impact in frame rate of any one object - even though it might have thousands of polys - compares to the reduction in reality of objects popping into the scene like Autogen trees/buildings do.
