• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi guys - Thought id drop this one in as I sit arguing with Microsoft about failed registrations

Has anyone have FSX steam and have migrated from ye' old cd version - whats it like?? Do they compare, is there the same options to added Airports and Scenery like the old version , making airports and adding via ADE does it compare

If just steam the same questions apply really

RATIONAL: been and fsx junky since FSX came out followed by Deluxe - never had a real issue until the last 30 days - long story short - MS sent down an update and took out my installer and registration protocol in one simple foul swoop.

Got MS level 2 on board and they admitted the update basically nuked my system (could not say anything else as it was clear when they were getting loads of issues being pipelined' through all with blue screen of death issues since October 2018.

2 days work and Ive win 10 up and running now all reinstall all progs . all go great except FSX and FSX deluxe - the latter called for a phone activation, called them and lo and behold tey will no longer support this feature BUt they will pass me to the XBOX team who will help (Yea , really ???). Some to some guy Unos who gave me a incident number and proceeded (silly him) to rip in to me for wasting their time as he ONLY deals in XBOX and NOT registrations. passed me back whence I came to be told no one does this process any more (supported by their manager) but loads of silence when I said "errmmm, its your server that failed the registration and your server that instructed the call to activate by phone" Long story short - 2 hours in and Ive spoken to 12 people all saying different things, all passing the buck and all stumped when I hit them with the phone activation Is used for XBOX its the same process

So after a Monmouth phone call that wasted in total 4 hours that Ill never get that life back I raised the white flag and gave up. I cannot talk to an organisation who have such a poor attitude to customers and deny everybody that each says .

So I though what about steam?

Steam works fine for me. Dovetail seems to have done a few fixes to the old code.

Another alternative is to migrate to P3D, but addon FSX aircraft with DLL gauges will no longer work.

rhumbafappy , that means alot from you thanks for that

1 question. Do you use it with ADE etc for building scenery or adding aircraft? basically is it like FSX in its ability to allow airports as ad don scenery and new aircraft etc?

I also use FSX SE without issues. It's basically FSX with a few small fixes.

There is no SDK for it, but you can use the FSX SDK or the P3D 1.4 SDK. Then you can use all development tools for FSX, including ADE.

I have both. I had to redo the sims and had to uninstall one in order to load the first one first, then the second one second. I think you have to load FSX CD first, then the Steam version second. Easy to do as you can rename your folder and make a new folder clone and copy parts back into it so it thinks its deleting it all.. then you flip things back in.

FSX Steam runs way better as they have updated tons of things to run with modern Direct X and modern, newest graphics cards technologies.

FSX CD is ancient... Isnt it like 12 or 14 years old now?

P3D Rocks!!! :)

@lionheart

yep its getting an old fella now. This issue seems to be the fact that since M-soft lifted support for it the CD's can demand a phone activation (they might not support the software by heck they want to stop it being illegally transferred) so when you have to phone activate its ESSENTIAL you only do it using the phone line input of digits and NOT have human communication because that'll take you to the edge . They claim no way will they take a phone activation for the game yet cannot understand why they servers call it.

Now Im "Steamed" Im a lot happier as far as being able to access downloads if I need a complete clean up. However, I have kept my CDs as I went across the deluxe one and accessed the SDK , found the SP1a update on the net and it all went in.

Awesome. You are up and running then.

Note you can also use the P3D V1x SDK which will work with FSX. You might need to join for 30 days to get the SDK. Not sure how that works.

The P3D v1.x SDK is totally free to download and use, whether you have licensed P3D or not.

When installed as "stand alone" FSX:SE is functionally identical to the box version of FSX Deluxe, including the Registry Key data.

One thing about this whole scenario is that I might not be the only one who will go through the issues encountered so having people who have may just put a contingency value forward because as we all know , backing up all we do with everything flight sim is a real piece of work and one we may "remember to do " on occasion. The "remember to do " normally come back to haunt us when we least expect it.

I would say everyone using FSX should probably start using the Steam version. It will ensure a few more years of being able to use your collections of addons.

I would also say that everyone using FSX might consider a move to P3D in the future. Steam and Dovetail won't offer FSX in perpetuity. Nor is P3D likely to last forever, but it will last for a bit, and it will be compatible with changes in the Windows operating system. P3D is still being developed. FSX is not.

Most FSX scenery and some FSX aircraft are working in P3D. It's a familiar environment. And the shock of change is less than if you jump to X-Plane or one of the newer sims in development.

All that said, I think X-Plane will be around for a bit. Smaller company that makes it's livelyhood from that sim, and it has been around for many years.

mmmm thats a good point Dick. I think we all are include to stick to the familiar just in case we encounter issues in transferring over to a new system which in turn stops us simming and model making and turns us in to helpdesk hunters

The trick to migrating to FSX:SE is to save all your old FSX folders. Modules, Addon Scenery, Gauges, Effects, EVERYTHING.
Once you've gotten a "vanilla" FSX:SE installed, you can copy ALL those folders you saved off over to it, but do NOT permit overwrites. That way, any of the files you've added, from World Scenery, to Aircraft, Boats, and so on, will go to the correct folders, but only the addon files you've added to your old FSX install, will transfer over.

You can keep the old folders from your box version as a kind of back up, since when you do a verification of the FSX:SE install, and it finds problems, they could get deleted in the repair process. You can just copy you addons back over again, and away you go!

I personally use 7Zip to save stuff like that. It seems to have one of the best compression ratios around, in my experience. That way, the back-ups don't take as much HDD space, and are readily available to re-install, without loosing them. The zipfile remains, even after you extract the files out of it, so you can do it as often as you need to. Real handy back up method, IMO.

Good luck!
Pat☺
