• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Tree Solution

Gentlemen,

Is there a specific procedure to make TreePlanter work for FSX? Or is there another similar solution to plant trees and shrubs in FSX. My basic object designer is GMAX with other specialized utilities for other jobs.

Not tried it in FSX - what doesn't work? If it uses FSUIPC to collect location data then you would need version 4 to work in FSX. As far as I know most FS9 utilities will work with FSUIPC4.

If it is the trees themselves then Tree Planter uses object trees and not autogen trees so it should still be possible to plant FS9 trees in FSX.

Alternatively Library Object Manager Version 2 (from my site) has some utilities in the Scenery Maker to create lines or areas of trees. This might do what you are looking for

You might also want to checkout the huge collection of trees that is contained in FsX by default already. Maybe you don't need any special trees anymore and you can just use the default ones.

You can place these with LOM Version 2 if you want to create tree lines and so on.

I nstalled Treeplanter after FSX hoping to use it for trees in FSX. The message I get when I attempt to start Treeplanter with FSX already running is "No connection to FS2004". Is there a config issue that I need to tweak. As far as the FSUIPC version. I'm not sure but it is the version that comes with Captain Sim's 727, if that helps any.

Thanks

OK, I checked and installed FSUIPC v4. Started FSX and then Treeplanter. Message displayed was "This program works only with FS2004. Guess I will start investigating LOM ver2.

Guess it would be better to use autogen trees that change with seasons.

Well good luck with whatever way you decide to go. I guess you could use TreePlanter to set up your trees in FS9 and move the bgl into FSX.

I've configured the Object Placement Tool as specified. I can go into FSX and open OPT, place an object then save it as an XML file. When I use BGLCOMP to compile the resulting XML file, I get a significant error message. Any ideas what might be wrong? If I can get this fixed the available trees will work fine.

Mike

If you post the XML code then maybe we can see what is wrong with it.

Jon,

Here is the code where I attempted to place some static planes:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="Windows-1252"?>

<SimBase.Document Type="MissionFile" version="1,0">
<WorldBase.Flight>
<SceneryObjects.LibraryObject InstanceId="{DFDBB3C6-7022-43CA-9E63-EAFD0C4AD1D6}">
<Descr>air_staticplanes01</Descr>
<MDLGuid>{B1B58B56-A054-4BB1-BA96-5E799ABCD16C}</MDLGuid>
<WorldPosition>N39° 7' 14.24",W94° 33' 55.20",+000000.00</WorldPosition>
<Orientation>0.000,0.000,0.000</Orientation>
<AltitudeIsAGL>True</AltitudeIsAGL>
<Scale>1.000</Scale>
</SceneryObjects.LibraryObject>
</WorldBase.Flight>
<MissionBuilder.MissionBuilder>
</MissionBuilder.MissionBuilder>
</SimBase.Document>

I made an assumption that if the ACES team release this that I didn't have to worry about the XML formatting.

Mike

As far as I know BGLComp cannot compile XML from a mission file. You need to use regular BGLComp XML for that, There is a way to turn mission objects into a regular scenery bgl file but I have not used it - one of the guys in the mission forum should be able to tell you.

Alternatively if you want to use BGLComp then you need a placement tool that works with FSX or write your XML by hand.

You can place statics airplanes the same way you do with others objects in your scenery. Try the following code lines:

I wonder if it is possible to create tree areas from a geographical referenced image as a water mask (like alpha channel) but with the black areas representing trees?

And how can be this done (with what software or utility)?

Thanks in advance.

LOM can't do it from a geo-referenced image but it can do it by marking out the polygon area using your plane in FS. The resultant polygon is then filled by a selection of trees of types and density depending on your settings.

@ scruffyduck,

I looked at your site for LOM 2 but is it still a beta ? A warning says: do not use it, unless at your own risk.
I like to place trees in SF9 and FSX (I suppose this will not work in FS2002 ?). So I should better use Treeplanter... ?

Well good luck with whatever way you decide to go. I guess you could use TreePlanter to set up your trees in FS9 and move the bgl into FSX.

Is that for sure it works ?

You need version 1 for FS9. Version 2 uses FSX library objects. You could use version 1 to create whatever you want and then copy the bgl files to FSX (remembering also to copy any libraries)

Version 1 works fine in FS9. Version 2 should what you need OK in FSX. It is in Beta and there are one or two things that don't work but it should be stable enough. There are over 1000 downloads and I have not had any reported problems with it since it was released in October 2006.

No LOM 2 generates FSX Bgl files. For compatibility you would be better creating stuff in FS9 using LOM 1 and then moving the resultant scenery and files to FSX. SDE could be used to tweak the bgl but it should not be necessary. LOM1 uses old style Guids but (despite being told that the FSX BglComp will not accept them) they will compile and can be used in FSX. In compiled form there is no difference in the way that a Guid is stored between FS9 and FSX.
