• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX FSX vs. ESP SDK

At this point in time? Practically nothing except being a bit easier to read... ;)

Hi,

So if I dev with FSX SDK it will work with ESP?

Is there anything important I should know that is in the ESP SDK but not the FSX SDK?

Best regards,
Robin.

Well, yes it will. But, where will you find ESP these days? Prepar3D is the successor to ESP, and Lockheed-Martin provide their own SDK, which is not surprisingly identical to ESP and FSX+Acceleration.

There's no fundamentally difference between FSX SDL and the ESP SDK, and only a few new things (mostly bathymetry) different with the Prepar3D SDK and FSX+Acceleration SDK.

Considering most existing add-ons for FSX don't work in P3D, I'm not interested in it at this time. :) It is also unclear whether existing FSX devs will go to X Plane 10, given the licensing limitations of P3D (developers only) and the cost of it.

Thanks for the info regarding FSX/ESP SDK.

Best regards,
Robin.

 Most addons will work in Prepar3d. It's the other way around that doesn't work so well, but only if the aircraft is using P3D's new DirectX gauges or some of the new Simconnect features. Should be just a simple drag-and-drop from FSX's Simobjects folder over to P3D.

Back to the original question, the FSX / ESP / P3D are almost identical. P3D SDK has everything from ESP relatively unchanged + a bit more. ESP SDK only has a few minor additions from FSX, namely documentation and an assembler for the .air file.

The ESP SDK isn't sold anymore (was $99), only the version on MSDN still exists. It doesn't come with any tools, just documentation. So just go with the P3D SDK, especially for the re-compiled modelling tools that allow you to use 3ds Max 2009+
