• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

fsx_sdk1a.exe installation problem

MY FSX works fine. When I bought and activated it I was prompted and immediately installed SP1. A month or so later I installed the SDK from disk, not realizing there was a new SDK. I downloaded the new one and it would not install, though it removed my older one. I tried that twice and then reinstalled the original for study. I've since installed ADE (which shows SimConnect found) and FSUIPC4 (which shows the Add-on menu) but I'd really like the Tools Menu. The paths are correct and files show properly (Trust=1, "DISABLEDs" False, etc). What about renaming fsx.cfg "TODAYSDATE" for rebuilding? (Vista) Or am I out of luck without sdk1a? Any suggestions? Can I still use the original SDK for ANYTHING besides study? (Interaction with SBuilder/ADE etc.) It is good for study, and I have much to learn. I read a lot around here, but gathering sequential information is difficult. Try downloading the SDK a third time? If I figure this out I'll write an SDK "Dummies" book! Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

You will indeed have to make sure that the version of the SDK matches the version of FSX you have installed. Without that the tools menu will not work.

So for FSX RTM you need SDK SP1, for FSX SP1 you need SDK SP1A and for FSX SP2 you need SDK SP2.

To be able to install the SDK update you need to have the RTM SDK installed. The install process of the update will remove the old version and install the updated one. You should not remove the old one first yourself.

Thanks

That's what I figured. During my original attempt at installing the new SDK I had errors pointing to Office and permission rights, which I addressed with difficulty, getting new errors. Very frustrating. I had high hopes of getting into scenery design, since I'm now disabled and have plenty of time. I have another machine and don't give up easily. With FS11 not likely any time soon, I'll keep plugging away.

PS: Has anyone ever done anything about the canyon that occupies half of Millwood Lake in SW Arkansas (FS9)?

Success

It took three attempts and lots of changes in permissions (one of those Vista things) but I finally got past all the error messages and successfully installed SP1a. Now I have the tools menu and can begin in earnest to study the hobby anew. Thanks for the help.
