• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

OK guys, this has me stumped. Although I've used FSDS since release, winter is coming so I thought I'd take a look at gmax. Downloaded it and attempted to install today. Installer gives me the following error and aborts. I do not have a previous version installed either.

Error 1324. The folder path 'My Pictures' contains an invalid character.

Although I don't have the expertise you guys do, I'm not exactly a beginner either. I'd hate to try another download with this dial-up.

I don't know what your gmax problem is, but it sure is good to see you getting back into design!

I've never seen that error, but others may have. Once you get into it, we'll have some fun, eh!

Humm, I have never seen that error either. Have you tried to take a look at the GMax support site already, I guess they should know it better over there :).

Another option, have you tried to use the version of GMax that is on your FS CDs? In case there is something wrong with your download that might help.

G max wont install on mine either. I was told in the Discrete forum to wipe my Hard drive and blow the partitions. Yea.... just blow away about 30 gigs of programs and files.... Simple.
I'm still angry about this.

But you were not having the same error, were you?

If I remember correct the GMax installer told you the previous version was still installed, while it was not. That seems to be something different then this error.

Might be the space in the folder name.

Try to install it under a different folder, like: c:\games\gmax

This recalls me on some problems I had with some other software some years ago and Windows NT4.0. Invalid character can be really nasty problems and unfortunatelly only FDISK/FORMAT helped me. The problem I had was because of problems with regional settings so I had an installation of software under one regional settings and then somehow regional settings were switched to another, like I started with English reg. settings, then switched to Slovenian and a file containedone of our letters. James, maybe You have something like this? Or maybe You have a file like a link to 3,5' floppy (on Win2000-XP; try to erase the link, You won't succeed even in Win98 if You have dual booting).
Okay, try this solution. Change the folder of My Documents on the icon to my documents on the desktop (don't forget to create such folder first!). With changing the location of My documents the folder My pictures, My sounds etc. will also move. Then try reinstalling gmax once again.
If this won't help, try creating another user and try to install gmax there, maybe this will help, who knows...

Thank you gentlemen. It appears that none of the above is applicable in my case. I'm certainly not going to format and start over. This machine has been running for over 3 years now and has never failed an install of anything. This is merely an aggravation as I was just curious about gmax and have no intention of starting the learning curve all over again. 3 downloads convinced me that the file isn't corrupt. The drive is about due for a ghost so maybe after that, I'll mess with it a bit more.

Bob, we're still messing around a bit over here but my interest in FS has declined considerably. How you been?

perhaps having a go at cleanup up the old install with "windows installer cleanup utility" on the gmax instillation might help the problem as it seems to me its not installed properly.

i once had fsx installed and something wasnt right so i tried to uninstall it. during the process my computer either crashed or froze or something along those lines...anyway, when i restarted it had not fully uninstalled. i was in deep trouble when i tried to reinstall fsx as the installer kept telling me the program was already installed on my computer, but i couldnt do a repair as files were missing. after calling tech support at microsoft, they directed me to this utility.

Are you installing into the default
C:\gmax
location?

I have not seen this error, but have installed gmax fairly recently onto a Win7 x64 computer, with no issues (despite new OS and ancient installer)

The person who understands what is happening probably has a nice job at Autodesk, and is forbidden from helping you! ;)
