• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

GMAX Light Tutorial

OK, so the base and the effect are still aligned. That's good news.

Did you place the lines with the ground polygon wizard? Then they should have received the same correction for the curved earth (assuming they have the same reference point).

Yes, I placed with gp wizard. I did not correct them with earth curvature tool, I'll try and report back.

Tic, thanks I'll go to study it.

EDIT: Arno, but gp wizard does automatically correct earth curve or not?

Ok, I tried and there is a very little difference between corrected and non-corrected earth curvature. But however it not matches the yellow taxi line.

So I assume that gmax and Max have different reference point.

Infact....

Originally I've created and completed my gp with Max. And loaded bgl in FSX.

Due the fact that effect don't work with Max (I don't know why) I had to convert (via BFF script) the max file into gmax format.

Doing so I have a reference background, the taxi lines.

So I created the new lights/effects with gmax (that work perfectly) and place them above the taxi lines.

But maybe, I come to this conclusion, during conversion from max to gmax, the reference point is changed a bit or is slightly different.

So is there a way to verify if max and gmax have the same regerence point?

Update....

Here are some tests I did.

Let's start from the base model in gmax, as you can see it's a simple cilinder (the base) with a box (for effect attach point) above it. The box will render a green light for taxi (fx_navgre.fx)

Here is the base model placed along the taxi line in gmax, as you can see it's centered into the taxi line (it's not perfectly centered, I did for a quick test):

Here is the model .MDL exported from gmax, base and box are aligned

Here the result in FSX before correction for earth curvature, base is misaligned respect boxes that are centered above the taxiline:

And here the result after earth curvature correction, the same green boxes centered and base even more misaligned:

Why in your opinion that result? I thought before that reference point between Max and gMax was different, but if green light are centered above the taxiline, the problem is not the reference point, but the base. Any ideas?

---UPDATE and SOLUTION---

I downloaded the last dev MCX release, I was using the 1.3.0.0 instead of 1.4.0.0 and applied earth correction curvature, this the result, perfect:

Thanks for your patience guys!

Still some problem on that curve and taxiway......

However, as Tic said, these effects tend to kill a bit FPS.

Tic, in the thread you linked, are lights done only with texture? Reading it rapidly it seems to me you spoke about effects too, or am I wrong?

I found the problem of misalignment for the curve and taxiway, it's gmax.

Infact I tried to redraw the taxilights (without effect because not working) with 3ds and the are perfectly aligned to the taxilines and curves.

So I suppose that gMax and Max 2015 have slightly different reference point.

The problem that I have is this:

1) if I use gMax can export effect but can't align taxilights perfectly
2) if I use Max can't export effect but can align perfectly the taxilight

That's incredible.

A solution could be to render light without effect (is it possible?) and use Max, or get Max working with effects.
