• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

GMAX not showing textures

Hello everyone,
I recently got a new computer with windows 7(64 bit). everything is running great (FSX hitting almost 100 fps) except i have one problem with gmax. In gmax when i texture a model no matter what i do the texture wont display within the gmax program. However, if i export the model the texture shows up in fsx perfectly. Basicallly i apply the texture in the materials editor, click the blue and white checkered box, uvw map the texture. But my model still remains in its default colour e.g blue/grey/brown.....etc with no texture visible.

I have used GMAX with vista many times and never had this problem.
If it helps i am using the direct 3d driver and have a nvidia gt530 graphics card. I also have smooth and highlights enabled in the view menu. Any help? beacuse it is very difficult to texture something without being able to see the result.

Thanks

I's very weird, usually it's the opposite :D, people can't see the textures in Fsx,In gmax the only you can do is apply, and check that blue, wihte box.
Can you post what is the feature or spec of the pc, that frame rate is good, but you should say under what conditions, near of a complex airport ?

i have an i7-2600 4 gb ram, nvidia gt 530, 1tb harddrive. i think it should be well able to handle gmax. i also have a 1.9ghz laptop with 2 gb ram and it runs gmax without an problems. im a bit annoyed as i bought the computer to improve my designing :(

It is difficult to uvw map when i cant see how the textureit looks. instead i just guess the dimensions and hope for the best. I cant post a screenshot now as i am at work but tommorow i will post a screenshot of my problem if it helps.

thanks for the reply

Well, just don't worry, must be a silly thing, here with W7, and never fail, I choosed as Display drivers: direct3D Nvidia gtx 260, (in "preferences settings"-viewport), And the process for materials can't be simpler, new material, and once worked with the material, apply and check the litlte blue box. by now I have not heard of such an issue, so just not worry at all

Here another reason why could not work the textures in gmax
"Using Mapping
You can use scanned and painted bitmap images as part of the material. The placement of these bitmaps is controlled by the UVW mapping coordinates. If an object has no UVW mapping coordinates, the texture will not be visible in the viewport. UVW mapping coordinates can be added to an object or sub-object selection through the use of UVW Mapping modifiers."
Reading a tutorial is what I found, but I mapped without apply uvw mapping, I don't understand it

What texture format are you using?

What video driver are you using within GMAX? Try changing that?

i have tryed using many different formats- jpeg, bmp, dds, tga, png but none of them work. I have also tryed all of the different display drivers and again no luck :(

i have also tryed running GMAX in compatability mode for Vista and XP but that doesnt work either, running as administrator doesnt work either

by the way i appreciate the help guys :D

The only way I could replicate that is not asigning UVW maping.Do this, click in Standard primitives, box and before you draw your box, check "generate mapping coordinates" at the bottom of the command panel, make the box, apply Fsx material and asign a bitmap to this. then apply material and check the blue-white button.

all i get is this,

i have just found a workaround :D
if i export my model to Arno's model creator x, save it as a .3ds file and then import it back into gmax, it works.

not a perfect solution but it works i guess :)

Always there is some kind of solution , anyway it's a misterious thing.Only can think of the texture formats, but you say too that have checked this with all the formats.extange really.

I find the texture mapping display in GMAX can be displaced if you use certain formats, like 8 bit (256 colors). And DXT formats do not display AFAIK. 32 bit BMP files will probably display, but I haven't checked for mapping displacement using that format. Others use PSD files with no problems though.

Hope this helps,

All my gmax textures are Photoshop PDS, and in my opinion, the best way to go. Before I used tga. Both works well, regarding layers and all that I convert my PSD's directly with the FSX ImageTool, which is NOT the same ImageTool as the FS9 ImageTool. Just mentioning this in case someone already have fallen into that trap...

I use FSX SP2 or Acceleration. In future never without ACC, as it is the same as SP2, but gives me additional Navy goodies, and more MS models to place with Instant Scenery :D

Cheers,
:D

Can you post a sample texture and .gmax file that has the problem?

It doesn't sound like a config issue if a 3ds file will work when loaded back in.

We can then have a look.

BTW: You don't need to Run in Compatibility Mode. You do need to disable Desktop Composition under the same compatibility tab.

Also: You are running a laptop with hybrid graphics? Make sure that the program is set up to run using the Nvidia chip, to match your selected driver, rather than the Intel one.
