• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi i have just reinstalled gmax to export a lot of my old files so can convert them to obj's for blender. The problem is i can not export them to mdl's. They are gmax files all exported perfectly well when i did it a few years ago. I am getting io errors netframwork errors everything but the kitchen sink. Everything starts okay ,gmax without the fsxpack and when i install the gamepack. I can get the guid and friendly name , i get to the export put the file in to export to mdl get to bitmap fs9 press export and up pops the long list of errors. Have i done something wrong...Help Arno.Stewart Haworth

Where did you install GMAX? Hopefully not into any Program Files folder...

no just on c drive and still get same result running as admin. It's strange as i can do all the modeling in gmax it's just the exporting.

I have the latest sp2 now installed.NOT exporting.

When i go to export there are no files showing to export , could that be the problem.ALL sp1 sp2 abd accel do the same thing.O startup gmax does not find the scripts for the gamepack but i can start it through maxscrips/runscript.fsxtools.ms.Could it be windows 10 i had some problems my3ds max.

I thought the Steam SDK was incomplete? (missing the compiler) Or has that been sorted over the years? If you have 3ds Max, I'd use the P3D 1.4 SDK, the link's in the Resources section under SDK. if your Max is a recent version, you may have to use the v4 SDK to export to .X before using the 1.4 XToMDL to compile.

Only v5 explicitly supports Max 2021, so that’s what I’d use (with the v1.4 XToMDL.) I’m sure Max 7 simply won’t run in Win10, I tried installing it in Win7 a long time ago and it just locked solid, so finally bought a Max 2008 license which I still use.

i have my 3dsmax 2013 on one of my disk drives, i'll have to connect them to see which one. OK tried p3d sdk still comes up with unkown .

Max 2013 is, to my knowledge, unsupported by any version of P3D SDKs. :banghead: No idea why.

A screenshot of the errors, or at least the first crop of them, would help to understand what’s going on.

Have you tried Tom's suggestion of using 3DMax 2021 with the P3Dv5 SDK installed, but substituting the P3Dv1.4 Xto MDL file to actually compile the X file (which produces FSX compatible MDL files)?

Thanks but i know the p3d way, but it is my old files i did in gmax. 3dmax does not give you the bin or xml it gives you the mdl then you have to convert to a 3d file.Old fsx mdl's work fine in fs2020.I can export using the fs2004 sdk and create an mdl just fine with the xml and created glift file from it. Blender is a really annoying to use i am still trying to get my head around such a complicated way of texturing.Blebder does not import textured models very well i don't know why perhaps someone who uses blender can give areal tutorial not a light speed one.

Okay, there are a few things to check since you're obviously using Win10. First is DirectX 9.0c June 2010 – without that, old software like Gmax doesn't work properly. Next is NET Framework, which is bundled with Win10, but the older 3.5 legacy features (going back to version 2.0) are not turned on by default and must be turned on by hand in Windows Features – its a check-box setting, easy peasy.

However, since the underlying aim is to export old Gmax projects to .obj, you can transfer Gmax files to 3ds Max and do it from there. There are two realistic routes which preserve mesh, mapping, hierarchy, pivots and part names:- FFG and 3dsMax-Gmax Bridge. Both are script-based tools. FFG was a joint project between myself and Manfred Jahn which exports a model from within Gmax in a form any version of 3ds Max can recreate.

Either should give you a route to get the Gmax models into .obj format from Max.
