• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

P3D v1 GMax RenderingSuite newbie question

G'day all, I am just getting started with GMax and have carefully followed the P3D links here and installed the Rendering Suite into GMax. Now I find the following "The RenderingSuite (or the contained YAFRAY render engine to be more specific) can't use FSX materials".

Does this mean that (a) I have wasted my time. or (b) Ignore the above quote, it does work with FSX and P3D. or (c) I need to learn the difference between FSX Materials and Standard materials and how to use the "Materials Script" by hairspin?

I have also installed the FS Tools and I hope my GMax Bible will soon be in the mail.

Thanks and cheers, Mac

Yes, Gmax is not designed tool to be rendered with. Even 3ds max renderengines won't show that desired result that you want to see in FSX. The meaning of the materials are about the same. The only render engine is FSX itself. Gmax render suite may help you to see things just a little bit more realistic. You cannot even bake shadows, ambient occlusion etc. To do so, learn Blender which is free. Blender also does not support FSX materials. You need to make them in MCX.

The Fsx materials can't be rendered in any platform. But you can check this with MCX.
And as said above if you want a little more of quality you can use Blender but the life will be a little more complicated. I think, Gmax will export a Mdl file directly and fast.

....but the life will be a little more complicated.

Oh thanks Bernardo, I feel Im genius now with Knowledge of Sketchup, Gmax, Max, Blender, Cinema4D, GIMP, Photoshop, Illustrator.... + 3 fluent spoken languages. Im Just Kidding.. :D

I'm not sure which material script you think I made - I haven't! Before running we must walk so it might be better to learn the basic processes with Gmax: at least it has a working exporter for FSX, many users already building with it and a lot of resources, tutorials and online help.

With all due respect to fsfox, even Sketchup has more support online for this than Blender, but he's exactly right about rendering: FSX is the only authentic render engine for FSX.

Skechup is a good candidate too, I think any one could be good, I see the people happy with Blender, Gmax . SKetchup. just have to master the one choosen.
But as said Fsfox. having to master so many developing tools can be confusing enough.:D

That was my biggest Fear to start learning 3DS max, then year after I face the same fear to get confused between MAX/Blender/MAX/Blender... Yea, it is true it happened couple of times until you learn concentrate yourself and it becomes AUTO mode.. same with 2D softwares.. Basically the main thing is your interest. If person has no interest to those things, no wonder how - dead number.
So daily, tutorial after tutorial, consolidate your knowledge by repeating it several times..
Look, this school is being run by two brothers Both have the same knowledge of what they teach.. 30 years old guys, family business.. It is worth of it.
Thanks to them for getting me out of that fear..
Happy learning and dont be afraid of that. :D

xNormal can render ambient occlusion for gmax models and it generates an occlusion map that you place overtop of your texture sheet. It works independently on an exported model converted to .x with MCX and FSX materials are not a problem as it only reads the mapping from the .x file. xNormal is free so it's a slightly cheaper alternative to 3DS Max, lol.

EDIT: don't bother trying to use xNormal on sketchup models BTW, you'd have to remap them in gmax in order to render occlusion because sketchup mapping is a clusterf**k frankly.

Many thanks to you all for your response and advice. I shall keep going as I am at the moment, which is spending a day on each Tutorial Lesson until I am quite sure I can complete without referring to reading the text.

When I am quite sure I can use GMax I will venture into some of these other applications that you have discussed. I have about twenty years of old age to spend, so I have plenty of time for this project. LOL

Thanks again, gentlemen.
