    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.

FS2004 Gmax Scenery Tutorial Texture Issue

I am having an issue with the textures showing up on the model in the scenery tutorial from the FS2004 Gamepack.

Last night I completed the house up to page 18 which starts the instructions for applying the textures on the model.

I can assign the textures just as they show and the model will take on the diffused color I assigned with out a problem but I can not get the textures to appear. Even when I click the icon show map in viewport.

I thought the problem was I did something wrong in the tutorial so I did it again from scratch with the same results. At this point I figured that the instructions were missing a key piece so I went searching for another tutorial that might help. I found this one posted by rhumbaflappy GodZone Gmax tutorials so I followed along and tried to texture my house again using his instructions which were almost the same as the default tutorial. Still no joy at all.

At this point I figured that something was wrong so I just tried to create an object and texture it with out making any serious changes to it. I tried to apply the house textures to a very large sphere. Nothing and at this point I was ready to tear my hair out as I had done the default Gmax tutorials months ago and did not remember having this much trouble with the Materials section.

My last ditch effort was to create the box and before I do anything else texture it to see if it worked. Imagine that it did . I continued with the whole tutorial with the textures already on the box and completed the house up to the point where the instructions start to take you into texturing. Of course there is no mapping its just the textures slapped on the model but that is what they show in the tutorial.

Once again I built the house from scratch up to and including the point where you add textures and nope I get the diffused color that was assigned but no textures.

So I deleted everything and started again. This time I only went 4 or 5 steps in and tried to texture. Nope no textures would show.

I finally figured out as soon as I convert the box to a mesh that is when the textures will refuse to show.

I have not gone any further than this and it is my belief that when I start mapping the textures correctly they will show (I hope).

So why are they not showing? Clearly there has got to be a very small little detail I am missing.

I assume by what you say you are clicking the little blue and white cube on the Material dialog box to make the textures appear.

After you have created the box and clicked the Generate Texture Mapping box (and you say the texture appears), do they disappear immediately when you use Convert to Mesh? Apparently not? So what if you now apply a UVW Map modifier at that point, and then click View Align and Fit. Do the textures still show up on the box?

Thanks Tom

Not long after I posted this I continued with the Tutorial and applying the UVW Map is what made the textures show up.

That must be an omission from the tutorial.

Lesson learned that will not be forgotten. A few others along the way as well.

I don't think there are any omissions from the tutorial.

Code:
18. In [B]Modifier List[/B] box on the “Modify” tab, click [B]UVW Map[/B].
Notice that you now have a [B]Parameters[/B] rollout on the “Modify” tab.
On this rollout there are several types of UVW maps: the default UVW map type is
planar. You could use the planar type to map each face of the house object,
but because the shape of the house is closer to a box, you will use the box type
instead.

19. On the [B]Parameters[/B] rollout under [B]Mapping[/B], click [B]Box[/B].

Your right it is there but it is after the instructions on how to view the mapping. Which seems to be a little out of order but no biggie live and learn.

Thanks
