• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.

FSXA Gmax Snaps issue

For a few sessions now I've been trying to find out what happened. All of a sudden the snaps quit working. I've went through all the snap settings and anything I try does not help.
I found the topic, http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=92314 and figured that would solve my issue. No such luck.

I've went went as far as into the options (right-click) of the snaps so many times. Nothing I do changes anything. I also went into the (click vertex/shift/right click) snaps sub menu. Everything (to me) is set appropriately going by the post here and the Gmax Help File. That's what's baffling.
I've activated every setting within the options I can while testing. There has to be a setting I'm overlooking. I'm fairly new to Gmax so,

Has anyone else dealt with this issue that knows how to fix it?

I've had snaps quit working a number of times even though the button was depressed, usually turning them off and back on again makes them start working. I have had times when I've had to save and close, then restart gmax to get them working again.

Hi Jim.

Previously whenever I turned on/off the snaps there always appeared to be some lag. When turned on there was a blue cross-hair. I've turned them on and off numerous times while testing, and have even restarted Gmax to no avail.

Starting a new project or merging doesn't seem to change things either.

Hmm. Have you been through the main menu, Customize/Grid and Snaps... settings (iirc)? All conceivable options are there, including one to turn the blue snaps cursor off. Just be aware there's more than one tab of settings. I'd post a screenshot but I'm still reading this on my phone.

Perhaps have a look at gmax.ini in Gmax's root folder. Hunt up this section:

[ObjectSnapSettings]
DisplaySnapMarkers=1
SnapMarkerSize=15
SnapMarkerColor=0.000000 1.000000 1.000000
UseAxisConstraints=0
SnapToFrozen=0

These are my current settings, and snap is in working order.

Snaps Tab Vertex = "checked"
Marker tab, Display=checked / Size=15, General / Snap Strength=8 / Angle=5 / Percent=8 / Snap to frozen objects=checked / Translation=unchecked
Home Grid Tab, Grid spacing=0'0.43" / Major lines every Nth=10 / Inhibit Grid Subdivision=10 / Dynamic Updates, Active Viewport=checked
User Grids Tab Grid object automation=unchecked / AutoGrid, Object space=checked

OT; we need an app for smartphones! :D

Checked. All settings are identical.

Thanks both for the help

Right. Some probing questions then -

1) You have the 3D snap button on, not 2D or 2 1/2 D? (Select by continuous press)

2) You have at least one of the snap target options ticked, say Vertex?
(Right click on the Snap button)

3) In your selected object, you are in vertex mode?

4) Your operation is move (not select)

Any No given for this catalogue could mean No Snap.

1- Yes, 3D snap button on and green. When I hold the button down to activate at times there is an arrow in the bottom right corner. No difference noted.

2- Yes, Vertex
3- Yes
4- Yes

Wow, unusual ...

In the Snaps Settings where you check Vertex, Edge etc, does the small selection window say "Standard"?

And for another go at ini settings ... I notice we've got two ini files, the second one is at

\Gmax\gamepacks\FSX_GmaxGamePack\gmax.ini

Here I have got:

[ObjectSnapSettings]
DisplaySnapMarkers=1
SnapMarkerSize=15
SnapMarkerColor=0.000000 1.000000 1.000000
UseAxisConstraints=0
SnapToFrozen=0
[62f565d6,110a1f97]
ObjectSnapPluginState=0 0
[24960fd5,343a4913]
ObjectSnapPluginState=0 0
[1f120de7,30bc716f]
ObjectSnapPluginState=0 0
[52256183,106b5fda]
ObjectSnapPluginState=1 0 0 0 0 0

This last "1" is different in my setup.

I've also got a

VptSnapAngle=1.000000

under [Performance].

Worth checking/trying I guess, but better make a backup first.

Edit: if the error isn't in these values then substituting a whole ini file from a working setup might do the trick. Let me know if you want a copy.

Thanks again for your help.

Looking at the Grid and Snap Settings/ Snaps tab, Standard (in mine?) is the only option available in the rollout.

As for the other .ini, Gmax\gamepacks\FSX_GmaxGamePack\gmax.ini, my setting are as follows.

[ObjectSnapSettings]
DisplaySnapMarkers=1
SnapMarkerSize=15
SnapMarkerColor=0.000000 1.000000 1.000000
UseAxisConstraints=0
SnapToFrozen=1
[62f565d6,110a1f97]
ObjectSnapPluginState=0 0
[24960fd5,343a4913]
ObjectSnapPluginState=0 0
[1f120de7,30bc716f]
ObjectSnapPluginState=0 0
[52256183,106b5fda]
ObjectSnapPluginState=1 0 0 0 0 0

SnapToFrozen appears to be the only difference. Then again, the object(s) I have been testing on are not frozen.

[Performance]
VptSnapAngle=1.000000

Trying an .INI from a working scenario may work. Going based from the Snap settings alone I would say it won't make a difference. We'll never know until we test it so, yes, I'll try a copy of yours and cross my fingers.

I'll PM you my email.

This is odd. I loaded up an earlier dated Gmax model file. When it loaded, the Gmax GUI look was totally different. Colors of tabs, borders, rollout colors, etc. Personal preferences I call them. I clicked on a part and went to vertex mode, then activated 3D Snaps. And, they are working as they should.?

Now I'm REALLY confused!!!

EDIT; I loaded up the latest model file and the snaps are back to not working. (insert profane words here)

EDIT 2; No idea why I tried this, but instead of starting Gmax and then choosing the model file by clicking at top, File, (the most recent files opened are displayed at the bottom)then selecting the file. (See image)
1ype.jpg

I went directly to the "Scenes" folder and double clicked the Gmax model file itself. Guess what. Snaps are now working as they should. Question is why are they not working through the Gmax GUI options?

Colors are under Customize > Customize User Interface, then click on the colors tab and finally the "Load" button. I think DefaultUI.clr is default gmax (stands to reason), my personal preference is MaxColorsGrey.clr.

Jim

After finding the older model file woke up the snaps, I loaded my latest Gmax file to test. All was good again so I saved and exited. Restarted Gmax, reloaded my custom settings and all is working again. :)

Thanks everyone for the help in troubleshooting.

To re-awake a very sore subject I thought I would share my problems once again. To the issue of snaps not working. Well, when I open the gmax model file the usual way by (Gmax is open and running) clicking File, then scrolling down to most recent, snaps refuse to work as they should.

Another method by clicking File/Open, then browsing to the model file and opening, snaps again refuse to work.

Now comes the odd part.

If I browse through windows explorer to the Gmax root directory, Gamepacks / FSX_GmaxGamePack / Scenes folder and then double click on the model file, the snaps work as they should.

I've no idea why, but they do.
I thought this bit of info to be useful for someone else down the road of learning. :rolleyes:
