• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2004 Gmax Terrain Tutorial Tools

Hello, i am trying to create some photoreal scenery for fs2004 for the first time. And I'm already a little confused not even the 2nd page into the tutorial haha.
It says i will need Global Mapper,Mesh data (GeoTIFF), and Aerial/Satellite Imagery (GeoTIFF). For Globalmapper, do i need the paid version, or will the trial version work? And the Mesh data and Satellite imagery. Do i get those from GeoTIFF, or is that the format i need them in? It seems like the tutorial starts after you have all your imagery and elevation data and such. I have no previous knowledge of how to do anything with gmax, geoTiff, seamless server or any of this. Is there a tutorial for the lowest level of beginner? haha
Thanks,

I don't think anyone has a clue what tutorial you are writing about. Post a link, if you can.

Also, why would you use gmax to create either terrain or photoscenery? The end result might look like the default Mt. Rushmore.

Perhaps you want a tutorial to write a tutorial?:D

Global mapper is free to use but it does not have any plugins in the free version to convert to something useful in FS, I believe. That is where the paid version comes in.
If you find a site (and I think Dick, in some other thread, gave a number of options) from which you can download Geotiffs (with elevation data), you simply use an inf file and use the resample.exe you find in the sdk, to convert it into a mesh bgl.
If you want satellite imagery, then you can use e.g. SbuilderX or FSEarthTiles (maybe FSXKML?) to download it from the various servers that have it.
Satellite imagery is most of the time a BMP that you can convert, once again, using an inf file and the resample.exe that comes with the SDK, into a bgl.
The difference with a normal bmp is that it also contains coordinates and some more info if you use one of those programs, to explain it rather simply.

PS And, oh, do not worry, I have only started to learn this as well during the last couple of months and there is still a lot to learn.
