• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

gmax textures

Has anyone had the problem of gmax re-texturing parts that have had textures and mapped.Everything looks fine in gmax. All textures are correct and formatted for fsx.Export with no errors but in fsx all but one part of the model have the same texture.

This sounds a lot like the FSX material bug -- GMAX can give two FSX materials the same name, so it pays to check and rename any duplicates before exporting.

You need to check your texture files for FSX: it sounds like you have saved the same file as .dds for your various textures.

hi tom
no all textures have unique names.Only using 4 textures.24bit for gmax and formatted dxt1 for fsx.If I do each model and render it save as it's own bgl everything is fine so not texture.Do the same model and place it in another application and it's fine.I think its something to with gmax, only just started to use it again. If I remember bill told me quite a while ago that gmax retains some texure memory and this can cause this problem.Stumped.

found it! In the navigator I found a duplicate texture with different bitmaps. How this happened I do not know, each object had its own bitmap how they swapped is a mystery.

ps Manchester uk now will have the new tower.

I had a similar problem but on a much greater scale. If you let this really get out of hand, Gmax starts to fall over.

Glad you found it!

You need to start using the precise names for things...

In Max/GMax bitmaps are assigned to Materials, so what you found apparently was as mentioned above, a duplicated Material with different bitmaps assigned.

HINT: Always rename your FSX Materials yourself with something meaningful, such as perhaps the bitmap's first name. This will absolutely prevent two Materials from having the "same name."

Max/GMax will quite cheerfully create multiple materials with the same names..

My problem is that GMAX crashes when I try to rename materials, and I don't know when it's "safe" to do so.

Tom, it's "safe to do so" only when you have the material navigator window open, if you don't have the material nav window open gmax will crash every time :) .
