• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA Gmax to FSX export - normas problem?

Hi all, I have just come back to some FS development and I want to finish my old project. But I have a problem - when I open the gmax file and export it to FS, it looks weird, maybe like of some parts had inverted normas or somethink like that. Some parts look perfect (wheels, one wing, canopy) but the tail section, for example, is not ok.

Is it some minor problem which will disappear after I apply textures, or is it some more serious thing? I have never seen it before.

Thank you in advance for your possible help,

Pavel

My first though is that it looks like a mirrored parts problem.

Did you create the right wing as a mirror of the left wing using the mirror tool or the mirror parametric modifier?

For FS modelling, mirroriing an object/part should be done only with the parametric modifier.

Yes I used mirroring... Is there any way how I can fix those parts now or I have to delete all of them and to it again? :banghead:

Pavel

mirror works if you use a mirror modifier and place it on your stack. Just don't use the button for mirror on the ribbon. That's buggy and causes bad things to happen.

I'd just delete the mirror'd parts and re-mirror using the stack modifier this time.

Never ever use the mirror button. It applies some sort of transorm that is not respected by the export tools.

Only ever use the mirror modifier.

For stuffed parts resetting transform on them and flipping the normals manually may resurrect what you have.

Oddly enough, simply select the part, click on the "Evil Mirror" button again, then immediately add a Mirror modifier to the stack.

Export and check. If it looks okay in the sim, collapse the stack and you're done!

Fine, fixed with the Bill's procedure and successfully exported to FSX - thank you guys! But the next problem appeared with texturing - I am going according to this tutorial (because this is my first GMAX project, previous were FSDS) and I am stuck at step where he is importing his MD3 file into the LightUnwrap utility which returns Error message "Failed to merge model. Too many Triangles: 90319 (max = 65535)". Does it mean that my wing which I am trying to texture is too complex for this texturing technique? Is here any else way how to apply texture? I haven´t found any else complex gmax tutorial like this one...

Pavel

Yes, way too complex, and I don't know of another method without that limitation, other than simple texturing by hand (i.e. not using LithUnwrap).

Why does your wing have so many triangle polys? It's a small, rather simple wing after all. The only bit of "complexity" might be at the winglets, but other than that...

Are you certain that you were only exporting the left or right wing to .md3 for importing into Lithunwrap?
