• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Gmax video driver problems?

Hoping someone has some suggestions. I'm using Gmax in Win 7 64-bit and Gmax has started crashing in Direct 3D and OpenGL modes. The HEIDI driver (eeyuk :p) still works but is horrible for doing any proper work. FS, CFS3 and 3ds Max still work fine, so it's not a dying video card. Video card driver is fully up to date, DXDiag reports no problems. Crash reports say the problem is in core.dll. I've reinstalled Gmax already but no joy.

Did you update your video driver lately? If so, try going back to the old version.

I'd been using the previous video driver for more than a year without issues until this started. I installed the latest driver in case that was the problem but Gmax either crashes on loading a model - any model - or shortly after. It will load in wireframe without problems, but switch to shaded and kercrunchhh. The entire model is only 37K polys, but it also crashes on a 12K poly model.

Is it possible to use system restore to get back to the day before your problem occured?

weird, technically I have no idea, but I've working with gmax with vista, windows 7 32 and 64, updating drivers occasionally, recently I had to change graphic card with his new drivers, and always working. damned Gmax.

Headbanging stuff

:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I have reverted to the older tried and trusted nVidia driver: no joy. I have removed applications installed since Gmax worked properly: nul points. I have trawled the error logs for clues: nada. I have reinstalled Gmax yet again: phthbbbtt!!

I then tried opening the file in Gmax under XP - I have a dual-boot system although XP is becoming a memory these days - and it opens just fine. So I can still access the model but I'm not happy, not happy at all. And everything else works just fine!!!!

Grrrrrr!

Thanks Bernardo, but I've already been through all the possibilities in that thread, especially DirectX 9.0c.

Solved!!!!!

We have a solution. It was gross material overload: I had umpteen materials for all the bits and pieces, each using the same texture. :o :o :o

I've just finished consolidating all the bits that belong to each texture to a single material, both for the external model and the VC. Each model then had to be merged to a new scene to get rid of all the superfluous materials. Finally the cleaned up external and VC models were merged and Gmax just carries on working. Yippeeee!

Select by Material script was invaluable for this. :D
