• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2004 Ground Polygon mipmap type?

I used the Modelconverter wizard to make a nice looking ground polygon for my airport. I saved the textures as DXT1 with no mipmaps. When approaching from about 1-2 miles away it shimmers badly but when I'm up close it looks great. I tried saving the ground textures with mipmaps but it looks blurry and terrible until I'm almost on top of it. Is there a special mipmap setting I should use? I notice that DXTBmp has a plethora of choices in the dropdowns for Mipmaps but I don't know what any of that means (in "Scaling Filter" and "Processing").

Best regards...Duncan

Mipmaps load the lower resolution tex the further you are away. Only solution is to use higher res source.

Please do not try "NO MIPMAP" to any scenery. It is not like aircraft at all. It will cause problem more than benefit. When you are on the airplane on flight sim, you are quite far from the scenery, so mipmap is a must. Not like the aircraft, you will stay close to it anytime you view it.

Thanks for the responses. Is there a certain type of mipmap I should use? I approach a LatinVFR scenery and the ground photo looks good from a distance. Mine with mipmaps are a blurry mess until I'm on short final. My photo resolution is quite good because when I'm right on top it looks nice and sharp from a low altitude. Maybe I should compile my mipmaps with a different program?

Sounds like there is something in your scenery, such as buildings or objects, have no mipmap in their textures. If you have only one thing without mipmap, all the other things will be messed up and cause problem. Please check that all the scenery objects that you use have mipmap for their textures.

I actually have the same problem and I can't fix it. with or without mipmaps it stays the same.

I tried my ground polygon photoscenery on a different machine and it looked great with mipmaps. So there was some setting with FS2004(or windows) on my laptop that was messing up the rendering. The resolution of the source image is important though (garbage in garbage out).
