• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

help creating bgl lights

Use the Effects tool in the SDK or alternatively Arno's tool, which is much easier.

Sent from my mobile .. words substituted by iPhone at will.

hcornea would you be abke to tell me a step by step on how to do this if thats ok with you? i use prepar3d sdk and 3ds max 2012, i located the special effects in the lockheed martin sdk folder but can find it in the 3ds max.

Thanks,
Blake

He means to use FX Editor.. a useful tool to edit/create effects... you can get it in the downloads section, read the documentation it comes with and check the wiki

If it's BGL lights you want Blake, I made a tutorial several years ago - you'll need to click the images as the small sized ones are missing afaik; here

They would need to be built with the FS9 SDK, but work in FSX.

If you are going to be using a large number of lights, you will probably get much better performance using an FSX native solution (ie fx file)

The choice (of course) is yours.

bgl lights can be useful when you need specific functionality (eg PAL, visibility, etc) ... but there are some drawing order issues and the performance drawbacks.

ok hcornea for a test ive opened up the orbx brisbane orange effect (i hope you ok with it for a test) and ive attached it to my object with the prepar3d attachpoint, so then i export the object as an X file using ESP 1 in 3ds max and then i compile it in library creator and get my bgl and then i place it in fs2004 and all i get is the object but no light? what im thinking is that the brisbane ive got is the fsx version not fs9 is that why?
i will not post any screenshots without your permission.

Thanks,
Blake

That is because the .fx files used by Orbx can only work in FSX, hence why they are fully FSX native developers

if thats the case i might switch to fsx modeling lol, putting an object in fs2004 is the same as putting it in fsx but using xtomdl not fs2004 make mdl.

Thanks,
Blake

ok guys so after some great help with instant scenery from hcornea i finally got my object with the effect light on and its looking good, i just need to adjust a few bits of it as the light is abit off but it still looks good #, hopefully hcornea will be alright with me posting a screenshot, so here it is!

Hi,

A very good looking light indeed... much better than a beacon lighteffect.
Is it possible to post here this fx-file please. Hope it's possible.

Greetz. José.

hi jose, thanks for your comment. this is a test so i used an effect from orbx but i cant upload the fx file without hcornea's permission.

Blake

Not my permission. It would have to come from ORBX management.

I would suggest, however, that it is not too hard to learn from the default FSX fx files, and adapt thst knowledge to generate your own light, rather than using another developer's fx file.

That would be the way I would go.
