• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Help with initial FS9 texture loading (newbie)

Hi all,

This is my first post here, but I've been lurking and learning for a while and really appreciate what an excellent resource this forum/wiki is. So, firstly, thanks for that.

Now, my question. Please don't rake me over the coals for asking because 1. I am a newb, and 2. I do indeed understand how to use the search function.

I am in the midst of redesigning my local Class C airport for FS9 and things are going fairly well so far. My first hitch that I have not been able to solve by searching the forums is this:

When I load up FS9 in the location of my airport model, the textures I applied to it do not load immediately. Or even after a number of seconds. They do not load until I fly a mile or two away in the opposite direction and then turn around. Then, as if by magic, all textures have loaded and there is NO delay whatsoever in their staying loaded. Subsequently, I can fly in any direction with the airport in or out of my field of view and the textures stay loaded on the model flawlessly. What gives?

FYI:

1. The textures are saved in DXT1 format in a "texture" folder next to the "scenery" folder which contains my model and this is obviously active in the FS9 scenery.cfg. This, as I understand it, is SOP.

2. My textures for the adjacent ground poly (runway with asm tweaks) load without delay on startup.

3. I am running a cpu/gpu setup that should never have issues with FS9 sceneries.

4. If this is related to mipmaps or LOD, I should tell you that neither of those functions have been implemented, as my extreme newbieness precludes any knowledge whatsoever of such complex things.

Thanks again for providing such a wellspring of useful information. I am looking forward to some input.

Best,

bmart

Never heard that before, sorry. My guess is that you have too many textures that your graphics card is trying to load all at once and it gives up?

Well, the entire airport is mapped to one single texture file, so I doubt it is a result of too many textures. Is it possible that too many faces could be mapped to the same bmp?

When you say your textures do not load immediately, what are you seeing? Just white or gray untextured boxes or are the textures there but just blurry?

I'm going to say run your textures through DXTBmp saving as DXT3 with the "include when saving" (mips) checked and see what happens. Might be wise to back up what you have first unless you have a "master" .psd that you can re-export to .bmp if you don't like the result.

Thanks Jim. To answer your question, upon loading a flight at my airport, the model in all its bare glory is sitting there with no trace of texture. I can drive around the area and there is not a single texture on the whole complex (although my separate ground polys load their textures just fine). The buildings are just gray and black. Then, I take off and fly away in frustration (not advised outside of simulator) and head about 2 or 3 miles away without looking back. Then I turn around and, poof, there are my textures. Thereafter, they give me no trouble.

I'll give the DXT3/mips technique a try in the morning.

[Solved]

This matter has been solved. I simply exported the two structures (parking and terminal) as separate mdls and that has made everything work just fine. Absolutely no delay in texture loading now.

I am still unsure why they wouldn't load the textures when they were on the same bgl, but I suppose that is academic at this point.

Best,

bmart
