• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

How do I get Overhead Floodlighting ?

Messages

Hi All,

Wanting to light up my parking aprons using overhead floodlights - is there any way to do this ?

Thnx in advance

Its my understanding that placing a light pole does not light up the ramp. Lights do not shine down as in real world. A scenery design utility must be used to create the illusion on the ground that makes the light.

Someone else may have a better answer.

You may like to try downloading the file esdg_ramplight_rwy12.zip at avsim. Place the object library into Addon Scenery\scenery and the textures into the texture folder.

Although designed for FS9 they can be imported as an object library in ADE (Version 1.30) and they do work - there is a slight glitch in that the lamps actually appear to be on during the day but it is a reasonable compromise accepting that they do light up the ramp quite well during dusk, night and dawn. No ground lighting is seen during the day.

Thnx for that - now just got to find it....cannot find this file at AVSIM.......also, can't find instructions as to how to access library objects from Runway12 - my manual is only the 1.2 verison !

Putting the filename I gave you into the avsim file search brings it up immediately!

Put the library bgl in FSX\Addon scenery\scenery and add it as a library in ADE. The objects in the library can then be used directly. You don't need to use the rwy12 utility at any time with this process.

Please see my other post which explains where the release notes for version 1.30 can be found

Well I don't know what I'm doing wrong but it 'aint happening for me !

I put in the filename...with the zip extension or without...nothing !

Try again

AVSIM > File Library > Extended Search > Enter the name that Graham gave you in the Filename box and cleick Search. Cam up for me straight away :)

Well that is a small price to pay....sounds good to me.

Thnx for your help.

Just gotta make sure I pay the electricity bill now.....

I have an overhead lighting issue at an airport I'm editing (KTOL). I'd like to add a dozen floodlights to the cargo area but couldn't get the street light to show up. I found this thread, and then downloaded the lights set that was recommended. Now, how do I install these lights (they are meant for another program) into ADE and FSX?

One of these days I need to recompile the source so I can change it from LIGHT_LAND to LIGHT_TAXI. This would eliminate another issue that -so far- no one seems to have noticed...

In both FS9 and FSX you can "aim" landing lights using keyboard commands. It truly looks weird if you do this while at an airport where my ramp lights are installed...

...because all of THEM will also swivel in synch with your a/c's landing lights! :D

If you have the Acceleration Disk loaded there are additional sceneryObjects that show light on the ground.

These Scenery Objects are in the FSXP_FillerObjects.bgl and listed as

lightpost Object bigwash
lightpost Object bigwash ORANGE
lightpost Object smallwash

I have the Deluxe edition.

Those lights are not in the deluxe edition. There are many more (new) sceney objects added when the Acceleration disk is loaded. Many think the acceleration disk is a few new airplanes and missions but MS added 5 additional FSXP_ bgl's in the FSX\Scenery\Gobal\Scenery folder and all the new .dds textures are placed in the sister texture folder.

This can be done without using any FS9 gamepack things or 3D design progs, but there appear to be some drawbacks to it also.

There is a thread here by the user Horst1971 (can't remember his exact handle) who has a demo of .fx files and a texture. The drawback that I have found to this technique is that you will get a ground splash, but you will not get an aircraft lit up above your ground splash. That is why you as a designer will have to try it out and see if the positives outweigh the negatives. The alternative method is to use gmax/3DSMax and have your ground splash burned into your custom textures--this requires use of the FS2002 gmax gamepack to pull it off.

Finally, another method is to create a 3D light cone in FSX gmax/3DSMax, with an alpha faded texture, to simulate lighting. I have experimented with this method and never found a realistic look. Microsoft used this technique for their white-green rotating beacons.

Attached is a pic of something I am about to release, with the effect files in full effect. :D These are simply .fx files, with xml placement like we do with a lot of things in FSX. This is probably similar to what Eaglesoft's iight offering does but I am not all that familiar with what you did Bill. Surely my lights are not controllable by the landing light keys. Anyway, here is a shot of what the .fx technique looks like:

Here are the ESDG_RampLightSingle .asm files and the XML placement file, modified to use LIGHT_TAXI rather than LIGHT_LAND.

Compile with BGLC...

I now use them pretty often but i found some strange erros that take effect sometimes.

On one Airport the Aircraft does not have a shadow in the area of the wash of the light.

And the i placed 6 lights at EDDR one direct at the apron and it worked normal, 5 in front/at the edge of the apron and they were at night only white bright squares, at day they were onyl grey.
Even if i replaced them on the apron or set new, every time only the one that worked befor worked again.
Pretty strang..
