• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

How Open files in FSDS

I have two objects in Sketchup and I can export it for open with AutodesK 3DS max 8 and Gmax, but I can´t create XML files to do then library with LibraryMaker, and I can create XML with FSDS but with this software I can open only FSC files.
Is there one way to open the files with FSDS or create XML files with other software?

Am I right in thinking you mean you are creating bgl files in FSDS along with XML placement files and you want to do the same thing with gmax or 3ds max?

If so then you need to install the software development kit that comes included on the FSX Deluxe Edition disks or download the FS2004 SDK and install the exporter tools for either gmax or 3ds max.

They will then export a bgl (in the case of gmax) or an intermediate x file (for 3ds max - I don't know, I don't use it) which can then be compiled to a bgl. But you have to write the xml placement file yourself, (or simply edit and reuse an existing one.)

I don't think there is an easy way to import such objects into FSDS.

But if I read your question correctly, your problem can be solved in a different way as well. If you can export the object as a MDL object from GMax, then you don't need a XML file to put it in a library. Most library creation tools can do that for you, all you need is the MDL file of the object. Which tool do you mean with LibraryMaker?

Arno and Simon:
The original object is *.KLM (Sketchup) I can export from there the file to open with 3DS Max 8 and save like *.MAX to open then directly whith 3DS max 8. But I am searching arround the 3DS Max 8 but I can´t find there the way to export to *.MDL format.

Which version of FS are you working with? For FSX there are gamepacks available for 3DS Max (they are part of the SDK). For FS2004 it is not so easy.

Thank You Arno: You are right. I can do it now. The correct explanation is in "Using Modeling Tools" in SDK.
