• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.

Intriguing, but I digress ....

Show us the steps you are trying
(Preferably with pictures)
We can then try to sort out what you are doing wrong.

SPOILER: no-one here is going to do it for you. You have to put in some EFFORT.

Hi Lan Chen,

There is a saying over at my place: do not take too much hay on your fork!
Why do you not take it one at the time and tell us where and with what you want to start. Then we can explain what you have to do if you encounter a problem that is NOT explained in a readme or tutorial or point you to a thread or site that explains it.

* Click M to bring up the Material Manager
* Create a new Material. Make sure the small blue and white checkered button is 'on'
* Select your object that will use this
* Click Apply. (apply button is on the Material Manager panel).

You might try the tutorials. They teach you so much. It will help you out massively. Trust me. It did me. The tutorials come with Gmax. But... You 'must' do them in order or you miss tools that you need later in the tutorials.

Have fun.

I agree with lionheart.

If you go to Gmax gamepack for FS2004, you will see the tutorial inside. This is the best one and I started from that.

The world of asking and answer is over. You have google, you have information. You need to help yourself before someone else helps you.

When you come to the dead end of your knowledge, we will help you out of that.

Help yourself before no one want to help you.

But... Dont be afraid to ask questions. A person with a thousand questions is not a bad thing. Means you want to learn, really fast. Tutorials will help you with this. But you will still need the forums, so dont be afraid to ask people when you cant figure things out.

I spent 1 long week, every single day, trying to get Materials to show up on my parts. I almost gave up on Gmax because I couldnt figure out why the parts were gray instead of colorful and textured. Turns out, no one said anything about the blue and white checkered button. People thought I was a total moron that could not do anything. 1 week to figure out textures, so easy to do, but they werent working. I was in tears. I almost launched my computer through the window. I talked with God many times. Finally, Bill Leaming asked 'did you check the blue and white button, that its clicked on for the material to be active?' I checked, nope, off.. Fixed it.

You cant learn everything from the instructions, but it sure helps (you) to do as much studying as possible.

For instance. I just purchased 3DS Max, and I have found a zillion tutorials on YouTube that help me out on how to do things. If you are in China, you might not be able to go to YouTube, but if you 'can', you should find a thousand tutorials online.

Google is also a good spot for locating information, information that will be already written down for you, movies done for you. Key words in a search will help you to find the right tutorials and questions/answers.

Then, soon, you will be helping out other people that come in, new to all of this.

Guys, this person is just really ambitious and wants to learn everything in 2 days. He'll learn that it takes a while, that it isnt easy. I was there.... Poor Bill Lyons. I barraged him with so many questions... poor guy.

EDIT: There for a while, not even my website could be accessed from China. I guess I said some things and they locked me out. No one in China could not get to my planes. :S

Ha, guy! Not gay!

He means you're trying to run before you can walk!

There are many resources here to help you with the basics, it's a good idea to study the available materials.

There's a great video by Arno in the WIKI to get you started, this helped me when I started in July, it's taken me half a year of hard work and I just about am getting to being able to produce the scenery that I want to.

Oh yes, sorry, not "gay",bur default has only 1 material,do you have some other materials, like glass etc.

Yeah, you can put as many materials on an object as you like. Usually, for performance's sake, you use 1 and have a texture sheet with lots of different pictures on it you map to the object. To make glass reflective, you can either have a specular map or, if it's transparent, make a plane, and assign another material to it. Then you have to make it by default transparent, and have an alpha with the textures, ie. DXT3 or 5. This is .dds format. But gmax uses .bmp. SO you have to use different files in the sim and in gmax. This is for FSX btw....

I know your situation. I have been there.
Plese take my advice. Download gmax sdk form the download page and look inside the gamepack folder. You will find the step by step tutorial to make a house. I know that you do :(not want to make a house. But it is how to learn to use the program. Omce you finish the first house, you will be able to do any thing you want. If you get to YouTube. You will not be able to understand the English they speak. I know because we are the same. We do not speak English. Or you can buy a book about 3dmax in Chinese and follow the book .
Asking here is not helpful. We do not have lesson with ful step by step here in the forum. Hope you understand.

I has Gmax sdk and I read the tutorial first when I install finished. But I don't understand very well about the texturing. And you might know, some websites like Facebook and Youtube had been blocked in China(I abhor for this because I visited Facebook and created an account some months ago with VPN,but since the network automatic connect to Wi-Fi,I can't use my VPN and can't visit again).3ds max's technology can use in gmax?(3ds max is the same with gmax in some ways?)

Yes, Gmax is like a very old version of 3DS Max, and todays Max is very similar to Gmax, so you should be able to learn some things from Autodesk tutorials.

Note. When you apply a Material in the tutorials, you have a workflow;
* Create a Material
* Apply Material to the selected part
* Apply a UVW Map, adjust the Plannar to the part (view angle to be mapped)
* Apply a UVW Unwrap, adjust the objects wrap mesh to the UVW Plannar (map).
....done.

A UVW Map is like a picture map of the part flat onto a graphics sheet. You 'must' learn to do this to map your parts properly. The tutorial will show you how to do this.

Note, when creating a new Material, to turn on the blue and white checkered button. This turns on the texture.

Note 2, When applying a Texture into a Material, click the small square button thing next to the rectangle 'Diffuse' button. This small square is the button that allows you to go in and add a texture to. Click the Bitmap and navigate to the texture you want. It can be JPG, Bitmaps, PSD (Photoshop) but not DDS textures.

When you do a level in the tutorials, learn to do it by heart, by memory, so that you memorize how all the tools work, where they are located, etc. Then..... You can go to the next level.

For instance, you should be able to do all the levels of the tutorial by heart. If not, you might as well go back and try again, as you need ALL of those tools to create things in FS.... You need those memorized...

There is another one which is step by step tutorial in gmax12_tutorials.exe
It will lead you though the process to texture apply and wrap the texture, unwarp it. You will learn a lot from doing a model. Reading answer here is not going to help you much. You need tutorial and do the model and read the turtorial at the same time.

Open up Gmax and open up tutorial, you need to open the tutorial on the right side of your screen. So you can read what they want you to do while you are making your model.

We will be with you and help you as much as possible. We are your friends :p to help you out.

But you need to be patient. I have made a lot of models before I can understand what the program do and where is the right button to click or modify. I started my work at a small airport, only for GA airplanes like Cessna. I didn't start with big international airport at my first work. You need to build something small, get your experience. I'm sure there is a team that speaks your language. You might want to get contact to them, Skysoftsimulation.
