• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

How to create a texture from scratch

Anyone know a good tutorial on how to create a texture (to use on a 3D model) from scratch?

I dabble with scenery creation using Airport Design Editor, Instant Scenery 2 and Instant Object Studio. I now want to create textures to use on airport buildings from photographs. I am a 20 year Photoshop user, so I know how to clean up the photos, but how to I get them from Photoshop into a texture that can be used by FSX to paint 3D models? Do I just create a 1024x1024 image and try to cram it with as many parts of the building as possible and save it as a bmp?

Yes, but there are other technics, important to know which 3d modeling tool you use, but the basic is what you say to cram the texture sheet with the images and with uv unwrapping tool you apply the textures to the faces of the objects.

I read something about this tool because I not knew about it, I guess it work similarly to Skechup, no uv mapping and unwrapping, but very usefull and comfortable, don't know very well how work but I guess that the texture sheet is the way to go, assigning little parts of the texture to the objects faces, there is a review from Arno in the net , look for Instant Object Studio.

Hi,

Trying to put as many different texture elements of the building in one sheet is indeed the best for the performance. So that would be a good way to go.

My tutorial about making a house with SketchUp also covers how I made the texture from the photos I used. It might give you some clue. How you make the texture is not really different for the modeling tool you use.

Thanks a lot! Your tutorial explained it very good!
