• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

How To Install 3ds Max

I have been using FSX deluxe for 18 months.

I want to use SDK which I have installed. I have read the "Using Modeling Tools" instruction.

In setting up 3ds max and Gmax, I have been unable to find the 3ds max file that will allow installation.

Where to I look for this program?

I have looked within FSX and SDK and on disc 1, but to no avail. I have already figured out how to install gmax and to get it registed, but I can not find the 3ds max file. I feel a bit dumb...

Can someone please assist and point me in the right direction?
 
You won't find it on the discs -- there are two modelling solutions for FS, 3DS MAX is a full-featured modelling system which costs around $3500. GMAX is the scaled-down, free version. I prefer GMAX:)

If I understand your reply [TOPROB], then I only need gmax and not 3ds Max?

From what I read in the instructions called "Using Modeling Tools" contained within FSX it talks about first installing 3ds Max and then installing gMax. These instructions do not say where to find the 3ds Max file so as to complete the installation.

The gMax file seems to show itself for installation when you install SDK.

If someone can clarify this for me, it would be most appreciated.....

Yes, you only need one. The SDK however seems to favour 3DS.
Incidentally GMAX is a little handier to export from -- you can export directly to a MDL from GMAX.

Thou shalt not feel dumb! :D everybody on this forum was new at one time and none of us know everything (yet:eek::))!

feel free to ask any question you want to, though you might want to try the Search function first, because some folks will light a fire under you pants if you asked a question already asked 100k times. (not really:))
