• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

How to place scenery files?

I started using FSDS 1 week ago. I know how to place scenery files at a specific location at a specific airport.

But if I give a scenery file (made with FSDS) to a friend, how does HE place the scenery where HE wants it? Is there an easy way for him to do it, or does he need certain software to do it?

Thanks!

Hi,

I don't know what you call a scenery file? FSDS3 can export as a MDL object for example, these contain no placement information, so it has to be placed with a XML file first.

But if you share the BGL file you created, that means that the object is usually already placed (unless you make a library BGL). So it really depends on what you give away.

Arno, I've been generating bgl files with FSDS. Based on your answer, I now see that I can make mdl files also. I know NOTHING about the difference between these types, and know NOTHING about xml files

So I have two questions:

1. Using FSDS, how do I generate a file of a building that I can give to a friend that he will be able to place anywhere he wants?
2. Where can I find a tutorial that discusses all of these file types and how they can be manipulated.

Thanks. (btw, Arno, I left you a private message yesterday that you have not yet retrieved).

Arno...I found some of the information I'm looking for at an EZ Scenery forum, like the difference between scenery and library files. I'll absorb some of that and will get the trial copy of EZ Scenery to see if it's what I need. Meanwhile, can't FSDS save these files in a way that you can give them away so that other people can simply place them where they want them to go...without other software necessary.??

Hi,

No, to place an object at a certain place the other user will always need some software. So either you do the placement and give him a BGL that contains the object at a given location or you give him an object (MDL or library BGL) and he can place it himself at a location of his choice. For this last option he will need to use some software of course.
