• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

How to start scenery design using 3DS?

I have read the wiki but i still dont understand. Is there any videos to help me kickstart? Thanks

Yes, there are many on YouTube. If you don't find what you're looking for searching for 3DS, look for GMAX tutorials - the interface is identical in the early stages of building aircraft (using simple methods). Only when you want to graduate to more sophisticated methods do you need 3DS tutorials.

You will find more 3DS MAX tutorials rather than Gmax tho. Especially YT has so much sugar finding Gmax tutorials..
In case if you need to learn modeling and you have Gmax, then there is nothing wrong if you watch 3DS MAX tutorials and do your exercise in Gmax..
When you got the technical thing of 3D and how the stuff works you won't care to watch C4D, MAYA, Blender tutorials and do your stuff in Gmax...

It sounds like you are already adept at 3dsmax. That's the hardest part to learn. You will have to get used to what elements of max the FSX game accepts. FSX is not a very advanced render engine, so you'll be unable to use any materials not supported by texture images. Animations are limited to framed animations, so any bone/skin/ type work has to have keyframes prior to export. You can use normal maps (although there are oddities you need to deal with as documented on the wiki).

The SDK is aged, but still essentially appropriate. That's the place to start learning about the export and its interface. Once you install the sdk, there will be an option for FSX materials in your max, making the difference more apparent.

nixon, is everything that we are talking about matching your needs here ? Honestly, you told us nothing but I dont understand wiki that you have read.
We need to know more about your kickstart point with 3DS MAX and wiki, otherwise we will start to give an animation lesson too.. May it be that you are ok with modeling ? " ....make some primitives at least.. "

WOW ! In and was right here ! Nixon, why do you need 3DS MAX ? You can do modeling with your Blender ! Nice outstanding sceneries without pushing us hard on trying to google right tutorial.... ! Why 3DS ?
Are you trying to get the same signature as mine ? :D :D :D But you do not need to ask us like How to start scenery design using 3DS? Dude, once you have learned 3DS MAX, just install P3D modeling SDK MAX plugin and export your X files, thats is it.. Then ask about materials and what to do with X files..
Unbelievable..

My 3ds is free because I have student license. However I can't find the p3d Pugin for it. I believe it was in http://www.prepar3d.com/downloads/ but I got error 404.

Also the most important thing is I don't know how to place the modelled buildings in the scenery. I know how to make photoscenery but don't know how to put them into fsx.

Thanks for the replies, appreciated.

for the placement of objects you can use Ade, wishplacer, instant scenery (very good but payware) the SDK Object Placement tool "OPT", and others. You will have to export as .x file from 3ds Max, not as .mdl file, before you have to assign a guid number and a friendly name to the object for export. Really right now don't know of a guide that explain step by step how to export and compile an object from the design tools but should be.

@fsfox I never planned on making paywares. All my future products will be freeware, no matter how much time i spent on the project. People can spend their money on better better stuffs like pmdg, not on my amateur works. So hopefully i wont violate any license agreement.

@Tejal Bernardo I will be using OPT for now. I got ADE but have no idea how to use it.

Thanks all
