• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

How to stop automatic updates?

I only use ADE9X on Windows 7 and FS2004 to place certain objects like, for example, static aircraft or amend ILS frequencies. I have no desire to design airports or modify other existing data.

Consequently I am very satisfied with the current version I have and don't want to install any updates. However, right now my system tray keeps telling me it has downloaded the latest version and wants me to install it. Is there any way I can prevent this latest install being actioned and also stop future downloads from happening automatically?

Many thanks for any help.

David

The update system is always active and can't be turned off - however you can just ignore it. You might think this a bit draconian (well Windows 10 Home does the same and does not give the option to ignore it) but it has to be put in the context of users not updating and continually reporting bugs which we know have been fixed. The bottom line is that online updates apply only to minor (mostly bug fix) version changes.

We never release major updates via the online updater. If you are using 1.65 them I would suggest that you allow it to update to the current stable version. The next major version is on its way which will be a new installer. If you are happy with your current version then do not download the next major update installer (which will not be via the online updater) and you will not receive any more update offers online.

Many thanks for your reply.

Yes, I do think it is on the draconian side, and not just a bit either, but that is the way it seems to be going these days. Because Windows 10 does this is no reason why anyone else should copy their habit and other users not updating and continually reporting bugs is no excuse to invade my computer.

I come from the "old school" where I believe that others should ask first if they can put something on my computer and not just do it and then tell me I can ignore repeating reminders which I find vexatious. It seems that I've got this for life now and I'm not amused.

Well we are damned it we do and damned it we don't of course. However I guess you allow your AV software to stay up to date and would not want to disable security updates in any case.

ADE has followed this pattern for a number of years now. If you find the ADE features important to you then I can offer you a download for an earlier major version - say 1.6. However I would re-iterate that the last update to ADE was on July 25, 2015 and there won't be another for v1.67. If you just accept that one then ADE won't bother you any longer. As George so delicately suggests if this is still not satisfactory then there are other applications that would do what you want and may not force updates to your attention.

David, please understand that Jon doesn't want to force anything on you, but that he was wasting time trying to answer complaints of bugs that had been fixed but that the user had not installed the update that fixed it. So he made keeping ADE updated with fixes as easy as possible for us users. What you can do right now is allow those updates that you feel you are being nagged about to install. That should be the last time that there are updates for version 1.67. Then keep your version 1.67. Don't upgrade to 1.70 when it is released. You will not be nagged about upgrading. The downside is that once version 1.70 is released Jon will naturally stop maintenance of 1.67. My way of dealing with the auto updater is this. I start ADE. While ADE loads the updater is calling the home planet and checking for updates. If there are any then they are downloaded to my machine. This usually coincides with ADE being ready to go. I click on the update balloon and the updates are installed. Normally less than 60 seconds ADE has restarted and I'm ready to load a project and go to work. No updates great then I load a project and go to work. Easy peasy (may not be spelled correctly, I'm a colonist so I don't know.) as they say on the east side of the pond.

"However I guess you allow your AV software to stay up to date and would not want to disable security updates in any case. "

Yes, I do. I use Microsoft Security Essentials and I have the choice to stay up to date, or not. Clearly I do want to stay up to date. But the operative point here is that I have that choice. Likewise with Windows 7 - I have the choice to review and select, or not select, what I want to update. It's up to me.

"ADE has followed this pattern for a number of years now."

Well, I can honestly say that until two days ago I had never received an update notice and I have been using ADE for a very long time. So, go figure!! If I had been receiving these before you would have heard from me a long time ago!!

Anyway, it's clearly pointless pursuing this. Instead, I will reinstall a [much] earlier version of ADE which I have on my hard disk.

Oh such drama for much to do about nothing. Thirty seconds of one's life might be lost by allowing one more update to take place, then simply not bothering to do a total upgrade to the next version.

I have re-read this thread to see if there is something I missed and I do think that it needs clarifying - if not for David then for others who are bound to find and read it at a later date.

First I want to be clear that ADE does not use automatic updating. It uses automatic update checking. At no point does it update ADE or the users computer without the user agreeing to that. In that sense it works the same as many other applications who check for updates and advise the user that one is available. The title of this thread is how to turn off automatic updates - there are no such thing - there is automatic update checking. If someone is receiving actual updates without being able to stop them then there is a bug.

The change in the way ADE handles update checking was made some years ago. Originally we had a menu entry to let users check for updates and no-one appeared to use it. This lead to the problem of fixed bugs being reported time after time. It is true that there is no way to turn off the update check.

There is an article here on how the update checker works: https://scruffyduck.screenstepslive.../199532-airport-design-editor-on-line-updater but I am going to cover it here also.
  • Each time ADE starts it checks to see if an update is available. If one is available then it does download information about the update. It does this only once so it has that information available if the user decides not to update at the time but may wish to later
  • If an update is available then ADE will tell the user. This happens each time ADE starts and may be an overkill for users who don't want to make the update. However if is offering to install and will not install anything unless the user accepts the offer
  • If the user accepts the offer then the update is applied and ADE restarts. If the user does not accept the offer then nothing happens.
