• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Is there a hardware guru in the house?

Greetings to all,

I just bought a 22 inch widescreen LCD for my rig. It was the last straw for my CPU challenged machine (Pentium D 2.8). Performance in FSX dropped and I have (once again!) spent several early morning hours trying to tweak the machine.

I give up. I need a new processor and/or motherboard. Can someone tell me what specs you are using with good success?

My specs:

Pentium D 2.8
ATI X1650 w/512 mg ram
2 gb DDR2 ram @ 533 mhz
vanilla Intel motherboard LGA 775 socket

Looking for recommendations based on your experiences.

Thanks,

Derrick

Narrowed my search

Looks like I have narrowed my search to the Intel E6600 or E6700. Has anyone used either of these with good success?

Thanks again,

Derrick

FSX runs ok on my E6600 oc to 3ghz. I get 15fps or so in urban areas, but I like lots of autogen. You can easily see much higher frames but you lose eyecandy. E6600 and E6700 are very similar, and the E6600 overclocks quite easily. I have a suspicion that they are the same processor with different markings, thou I could be wrong. Big price difference.

I have 4 gb of memory, and if you can get a fast video card, that will also help. Some folks suggest 512mb of vid memory will make a big difference. I can't swear to this.

Thanks, Bob.

I have the 512 mb card already so I am good to go there. The E6600 will drop right into my motherboard so I think it might just be the way to go.

I will wait for the service pack, though. Money saved now is money I can put to a better rig later.

Best Regards,

Derrick

Excellent.

Off topic...I am sure glad they added the xbox 360 controller support...I direct 2 off-campus centers for a community college and frequently have to close one of the centers at night due to employee absentees. It sure is a lot easier to hide one of those controllers under the desk than my Saitek X45!

Have a good evening, Bob...gotta go practice my landings on an ice field. :)

Hmmmm...

After following your link I placed a call to the local PC hardware store...their price is $280.

Seems you were right about the prices coming down.

Thanks,

Derrick

One last note on this subject...

I ended up getting an nVidia card to replace the ATI X1650 Pro. I hated to spend more money but the ATI drivers were crashing my system and their tech support seem oblivious to the veracity of my complaint.

The 8600 GTS has been a real performer, though! And the tax man just gave me a refund so the hit was not so great on my wallet.

Still need to upgrade the processor but no longer do I need to do it before I can run the sim. It can wait at least for the service pack.
