• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Is using a Mask necessary and why?

Hey guys,

I am having some troubles with my analogue dial gauges in my MFD EICAS. Not showing up as well as killing the gauge.

One thing I do not have is a mask.

So, my question is... Is a mask required? and why? What do they really do?

Many thanks for any input for this old kindergardner..

Hey guys,

LHC

A mask is a kind of image in which those pixels with an RGB value of 1,1,1 are treated as transparent, instead of a standard bitmpat (with transparent=true implicit) that recognizes transparency as 0,0,0.

The idea of a mask is precisely to make visible selected areas of combined bitmaps that form a complex gauge like MFD, EADI, etc. This may be important in C gauges, where masks are usually applied over the background image

In XML you can avoid the use of masks, because a gauge does not need to have a defined background, and the display order of the images is given by the position of elements within.

Man Tom,

Great explanation. Many thanks.

I was wondering why some objects can have masks, yet I can just drop in font without a mask. Had me wondering how or why that would work.

I have noticed that compass roses and the like (PFD's) have masks. That pretty much explains it.
