• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

KLHZ- First Working Ground Texture

Granted, I realize most people will look at this and smirk but this is my first ground texture. I understand that there is quite a bit of work still involved and that since I got the tiles from SBX from Virtual Earth they are for my own pleasure. I also realize that some basic aspects such as roads and buildings (and a few hangars that still need to be built) need to be adjusted slightly so bear with me. But I still think it's pretty awesome. :D

You can find potentially better source from the NC OneMap site or even the Franklin County GIS dept.

FWIW, I was reading yesterday the NC is undertaking a statewide imagery capture program, so keep an eye to the sky to see the plane flying the many sorties. First release of the 6 inch imagery due later this year or early next year.

How can I access this? Will I be able to distribute it?

You could try this new thing called... the Internet! :p

Finding the correct file could be hit and miss, but there's normally a method to the GIS madness, so it works out eventually. Getting it into a format for FSX to use is another task, but there are solutions.

Most data like this is in the public domain, so you could distribute it with your airport. It does behoove anyone reading the metadata distributed or posted online to verify what, if any distribution restrictions may be in place.

Hey!
It's an awesome beginning! :D
One question. How did you make the ground polys for the taxyway and the apron? Is that ADE or GMAX ground polygons?

Mats

Mats-I used a satellite image as a background in ADE. I just drew normal taxiways and aprons from there. As you can see, some didn't line up quite exact but that can be fixed. ;)

Lol. I figured you knew exactly where I could get the files. I am very familiar with the Franklin Co GIS. I'm just not sure how to download the file into SBX. Also, since this scenery is payware, could I still distribute it without some form of a license?

PS. If someone could show me how to make autogen show it would be appreciated :)

Oh all right then. But it doesn't look ADE-like... ;) About that I'm wondering. But anyway nice evening and thanks for your fast reply :)

This isn't something that readily goes into SBX. The imagery is in a file format that SBX does not deal with, but it can be converted. The imagery almost certainly won't be in the required datum/projection that FSX requires. Does that confuse you? It probably should, but the learning curve isn't that great.

The imagery isn't the green glob that you normally see from the Bing server. If you're interested in learning I'll help, as this may or may not help you with your current release and any future releases. As the imagery is in the public domain. there are no limitations as to the use of the imagery. I checked the metadata file! Very few products gotten from a government agency will have any restrictions on it's use, speaking U.S. sources here.

Once you construct the base imagery file, then you can utilize that to add in autogen and learn all about the wonderful Autogen Annotator! :o

So you will need to decide if you want to use the imagery, how large of an area and if you're willing to work with it. A purchaser of a payware product doesn't want just one season for the airport, they'll want all seasons! But that's something that tweaking the imagery in Paint.Net can handle.

And yes, I do know where the source sits on the OneMap server;

ftp://204.211.239.203/outgoing/raster/local_imagery/franklin2007/sid/

#1. I figured you could use it because it's our wonderful tax dollars at work  </sarcasm> (Don't go off on me I was just making a joke :D)

#2. I tried using the Annotator but I believe I will need someone's help on it.

#3. I was personally thinking of making a comprehensive scenery for all of Franklin County.

It would include:

  • All airports
  • Hopefully with your help, photoreal ground w/ seasons
  • Major buildings in Louisburg, Bunn, and Franklinton
  • Minor buildings of my choosing (my house, Grandparent's house, etc)
  • Any other things that would make it look just like the real Franklin County

Okay I seem to be having a problem. I have edited the texture that was downloaded from SBX and I "over-wrote?" the original texture. For some reason I am getting the original texture, still. How am I supposed to edit the texture that is in FS?

From the forum front page;

"Use this forum to show off your hard work to the other visitors of this site. No discussions about design techniques here please."

Perhaps open a thread in the terrain forum? You'll learn of the "fun" that awaits you... :banghead:
