• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Light effects (again(again)

I have no idea how to make effects lights work with my airport. I see on Aerosoft etc. all their lights are places as effects over ground polygons. But when I do so the lights are not visible when viewed against a ground polygon. I create the effects boxes, place them then run the multiple box script as normal.

Any help would be appreciated.

Shaun.

I have read that, unfortunately it's not runway lights, nor using effects. I don't see why my ground polys show over lights in-front of them. Even the papi is obscured by the runway behind.

One picture might worth more than a million word.
Please post your pictures, we can take a look and try to help.

Are these ground polys created by the FS2002 SDK (and tweaked) or by MCX's Ground Polygon Wizard?

Sorry what's Flatten?

My other objects also show up over other effects, from behind sometimes.

So nobody else, at all has any issues with effects lights not showing when viewed against a custom objects/polygon?

Flatten is the polygon that you have to do in S-builderX to make the place around your airport completely flat.
If the area is not flat, your ground poly will be elevated by the point of center of the ground poly.

OH yes! No it's nothing to do with that. Some other objects I create I GMAX seem to do so, it might be a problem with the material. There's no special box that needs checking is there? I can't believe that I am the only one having this issue.

Also it appears that none of my objects have any form of anti-aliasing applied to them.

As you can see the ground polys behind the light, overlap it and show over it.
I really need help to figure this one out :(

So does everyone make their lights using FSX effects? Is there any other way to make them look convincing. I cannot resolve this issue, regardless of what settings my textures are at. It seems all of my GMAX textures override any effects that appear closer to the viewer.

Ah lights, I have experimented with just about all of the options, gmax method, fx method etc over and over again. I actually came to the opinion the best way is to make your gpoly semi transparent and just bring the afcad lighting through. Just let fsx do all the work for you. It gives me good results without the headaches. These fancy light beams and splashes that everyone's doing look goods but just not realistic to me.

That's the AFCAD lighting there. This doesn't happen on custom FX lighting. But I can't seem to get the working and not having the aircraft crash into them.

So you make all the ground polys slightly transparent? By the textures I take it? That is amazing. I'll check this out. That is amazing if this works. Custom FX look crap. I have wasted 2 days trying to get it to work.

I wondered how at santorini x the default (.xml is it) lighting shows up over the ground polys but not the markings.

Semi-transparent ground polygons show as much underneath as they show lights. That is unacceptable for me, it look a mess. I hear that fly tampa uses or used this method. but I think that I will have the ADE runway a bit wider and poking out at the edges a bit of my ground poly runway, it's hardly noticeable, and then the lights are pretty much viewable except at oblique angles. The lights on the surface of the runway can then be custom FX, which is viewable on the runways and taxiways itself.

OK, I see what it is.
It is AFCAD light so the priority is under ground poly, that's the way it is.

What I did is making light by using Airport for Window or you can use Scasm and modified the text to compile to Scasm.
Another method is making the light by effect and place it on the runway but use Papi light as default AFCAD. I did that in Phuket and it works perfectly. Self made Papi is not so good, the visibility is limited just only a couple miles. Runway light is not difficult to be made by light effect especially if you want to use the 3d light. You make your taxi light model and attach the effect you want. Then place it with XML.
