• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

sometimes export to md3 claims no uvw map, and proceeds to spherical map
everything including hidden objects....sometimes it seems to work...but there is a mismatch between what ive selected and what appears....see images..

single object..mesh select..poly subobj...check for wrong polys....right pane ..
right object view,,,align to view...set size...2by2metres....wont let me exp selected..will let me export md3...open lith lots of extra lines...is md3 broken.
is lith broken...sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt...fsx acc...followed
milton shupes video tutorial.....done this before and have some tex applied and working in fsx...what is wrong ?? jim

Your first pic tells that at least one vertex is not selected when exporting to .MD3: LithUnwrap doesn't like that.

On the other hand, UVW Unwrap doesn't care if you haven't selected all the vertices - it just shows the UVW for the vertices you have selected.

It would be a good idea to weld all vertices closer than 1mm before trying an export to .MD3 again, and to Remove Isolated Vertices for your object.

ime following milton shupes tut...ime selecting polys...all my objects export to
fsx without co- located verts or any errors.....

so i built a simple cube..8 verts...converted to ed mesh..mesh select,,poly select...right face polys only...uvw..export to lith...see pic...went back to gmax...uvw unwrap , moved object,export, see second pic...

no co-located verts...i need to map selected polys..otherwise i wont be able to map complex objects...is this a setting in lith that ime missing...jim

any insight would be most helpfull, as i did a test run a while back and it worked fine.so i completed my ext model.which exports no errors. and now ime ready to map the complete object...thanks jim

Yep, not all polys selected. Here's a cube I made, applied a Mesh Select and selected two polys only out of the six.

Export the cube to LithUnwrap and turn off the Warning Dialogs:-

Fire up LithUnwrap, load the .MD3 file and eeyuck:-

ALL the polys, or faces, of each object making up your model must be selected and mapped before LithUnwrap can do its magic for you. Any face not included will give the horrible results you're getting.

You need to keep a clear head while doing this. It's horribly easy to select all the faces or polies and without realising it de-select some or all with a careless click when moving on to the UVW Map modifier.

Once you have selected the face or poly sub-objects for one stage of the mapping, immediately click on the top-level object before doing anything else.

That caused me no end of grief until it was understood. Good luck! ;)

sorted lith

i did some texturing a while back, it worked fine...okay so i spraypainted my
fusalage with graffiti, just to test that i understand the process...then i went
back to modelling, etc for a few months...now for some serious mapping and texturing...

but it all went wrong, i couldnt remember what i did so easily before...

ime back, too many tutorials read, and i end up with a half baked merged non
functional method....but with some helpful memory assistance, and moving real slow and methodicaly, its making sense again....back to work, and thanks for all the fish..jim

the human brain has a limit to how much knowledge it can hold.

put in a new piece, and an old piece falls out...

are you sure

i can map prfectly my way...if i select mesh select, poly by id uvw map, move on to next, it works...if i click on top level obj before add uvw my polys arent selected. ie no map.could you expand on your advice,,,,,,ime not getting it am
i. but i will keep on till i do...

what i really want to know is what works for others, doesnt work for me.?

fsx/acc. w7 32bit..jim

If you are getting mapping going successfully, then by all means ignore my drivel above! But from your other thread, I don't think that's the whole story.

thanks for your patience

you know what your doing, ime a noob, it drives me crazy when what works
for the experianced, doesnt work for idiots like me...but i am determined to find out..

my engineering background has left me with a personality defect...i must understand how a thing works, or my head will explode...

at the moment it looks 50/50 between enlightenment and exploding head..

ime off for some food. this is going to be another all nighter...cheers jim

Get some sack time Jim, gmax is not for the sleep-deprived! ;)

And I'm not far from a noob, just I've been banging my head over mapping for weeks now and am getting places with it now, so it's still fresh in my mind. :o

my method is slow

and laborious. okay so ive scribbled my name on the a/b door...

glad i can texture after completing anims.....but i still think somethings wrong
with lith md3 gmax....or me...but what???..jim..oh yes the flaps ere wrong shape. ground crew building new set as i sleep...jim

I saw one of those at an air show many moons ago. As the pilot banked away from the crowd we could see up both jet pipes: my father muttered "You'd go as fast as that if your backside was as hot!"
