• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

LOD Photoscenery

I'd like the photoscenery to look crisper at a distance, is there anyway to force the a higher LOD to appear?

I know I could do LOD=9,12,

But what are the problems associated with removing the lower LODs? Will it significantly affect performance?

Removing the lower LODs will just make the photoreal give way to landclass textures at a distance that's clearly noticeable. Tried that once myself, lol.

Jim,

Just to clarify: does it also mean that LOD=Auto makes sure that lower LODs will be added to output BGL even if the source image is taken at particular (higher) LOD resolution only?

IOW, can I add mipmaps to the photo image with imagetool before resample? Isn't LOD=Auto in resample.exe enough?
Thanks!

No don't add mips to your source, they have nothing to do with photoreal, you'd only use them with model textures. Resample will decide which LODs to generate, not sure what the criteria is but LOD=Auto always seems to work as long as resample is generating an LOD13 or above from your imagery (LOD12 or below will roll away from you as you fly towards it exposing landclass textures, in that case you can force an LOD13 with LOD=Auto,13 to cure that problem). You can open your photoreal in TMFViewer and then do View > Level of detail and see which LODs were generated, the ones that aren't grayed out will be what you ended up with. Usually I think LOD=Auto on 30cm imagery will give you LODs 6 through 17, 60cm imagery probably LODs 6 through 16. To answer your question yes LOD=Auto is enough, that's all you need to do.
