• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Low Poly Lofted 3D Grass Method

Until now I have struggled with making 3D grass both look dense and not require several 3mb, 64,000 vert models using the "tree" method (crossed planes) copied and pasted innumerably..


So I realised how to do it with lofts to produce great results with hardly any performance cost! I think others have used this from what I've seen.

Here's how:

1)
Create a loft template as a LINE. Have it about 1m long or whatever, from 0,0,0 to 0,-1,0. Put the pivot point at 0, -1, 0.

2) Get your background template image in GMAX set up, and draw around the outside of the area you want to cover, and then criss-cross back, and then back again like so:

3) Now, loft it like you would do taxi lines, but this time it'll loft 1m up! Fantastic!

4) Now for performance's sake, change the path and shape steps to 1 and optimise it. You don't want nice curved corners, you wont notice and the penalty is too high!

5) Now unwrap like normal, put the top and bottom (left and right here) to 0.001 and 0.999 to avoid the last pixel so you don't get the line along the top.

6) Export the finished product and correct for the curvature of the earth (FSX) with MCX. Now enjoy!

Very interesting and simple technique, although calling it "3d grass" is a bit of a stretch. It's more like "3d weeds" right? :cool:

I'm working on the texture, that was just a placeholder.

And how stupid of me. To do the outlines of the ground polys use the create shape method and loft that... I'm going to have to re-do a load now.:banghead:
