• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Making runway and taxiways.

Hi,

If I make a airport ground. What is the best option to make te taxiways and runways? Is it a good idea that I place a sattlelite photo on a plane en then I make the runway and taxiway over it?

I would advise you to do the whole ground in gmax or 3dsmax (or maybe another 3D-program). Then you have first of all a good quality of your airport because you will use images which are tileable. I for my own do it like this: Take a Jeppesen chart (or a satellite image, photo,...) then I make the main runway with the correct length and then I resize the image so that the runway and the runway on the image/chart/... are lying one over the other. Then I start making planes until the whole ground (apron & taxiway) are perfectly covered. Then I do my textures and then you have finished with the ground. Just to say, start with a simple airport/airfield with very low things and then go up and up. Then you have not such a hard learning curve and you will feel more comfy while using the tools more often. In addition I can just say you that you should go to the Wiki to read the articles, tutorials,... which can really help you to come forward and which will learn you how to do something.

And don't forget, if you don't like it anymore, stop for a while. The next day you see what the "virus" scenery development can do. You will become addicted to it (If you don't believe me, ask all those guys here and you'll see!)

greets and a successful working flow

Hi,

Is this for FSX? In that case I prefer to use a resample photo scenery for most of the airport. On top of it you can then place some ground polygons for the taxiways and runways. But I would not put the entire photo on ground polygons.

Hey arno!

Can you just explain why please? Do you like it more that way or does the explanation has a technical background?

Hi thanks for your info.
I am making objects and things a few months now. I have never made a complete airport scenery.
Thanks for your information. I will look how I do it.

Technically it is possible to put the photo on the ground scenery as well. But I feel that using resample will give you better performance, especially when you want to use high resolution imagery. And I feel it is easier to make as well.

@arno:
Thanks arno for explaining this. I will take notice on this! :)

@Erikk:
Don't matter what you have done before and don't be afraid of doing something. I was in the same situation as you and now I am saying myself: Why didn't you started earlier this thing? Then you would have now a good knowledge and you would be much faster..however complaining about the past doesn't help much. Simply look forward!
