• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Probably a dumb question but what is the purpose of all these hold shorts? Thanks

Because they have been incorrectly implemented. Hold short thresholds are to control runway incursion only. Placed at taxi intersections, they would represent an unmanageable burden to traffic control in a situation where individual pilots can see, interpret and react to all possible collisions; a state which is not the case, when a pilot is considering entering the runway, where he must check with the tower in regards to the approach of traffic which is still to distant for the pilot to see, interpret and react to properly.

I think the author of that AFCAD is confused over the use of nodes on paths, and is perhaps trying to prevent some of the unprototypical behaviour which is endemic to the FS9/FSX/P3D AI engine by applying some route priority control. As Rick says, they are superfluous and will have no effect on the AI engine.

Is it not a requirement that the circumference of the hold short range circle, cross the runway centerline? I know they can be too far from the runway, but I do not know the limit. Also, I see runway incursions that are not controlled by hold shorts, so while Tim is correct, the parking ones are just "funky," I'm pretty sure that runway hold short discrepancies will cause the airport to reject AI landings and takeoffs. So, if that's the issue, AI problems, I'd fix that runway stuff. Remove the taxi links or control them with hold shorts and confirm those range limits, adjust as necessary.

It is indeed a requirement - seek out posts passim from the inestimable jvile for an explanation. IIRC, it's 250ft. Basically, if the hold circle intersects the runway, you should be ok. So you're quite right - these holds may very well interfere with landing traffic as the AI engine may struggle to route landing traffic correctly.
