• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Maximum number of polygons

Hi,

What is the maximum number of polygons I can use in my ship (Amundsen icebraker)?

I want to make some structures with maximum of details, like the cranes (4), the life and transport boats, mast etc.

This 3D model may be included into a city scenery with a lot of buildings, as it will be placed on Artic sea in North Canada aera (with no other 3D objets).

Thanks

Hi,

It is not really easy to mention a number here. There is no real hard limit in FS, but the more detail you add the lower the performance will get. Also the amount of polygons is not the only parameter that influences the performance, the amount of different materials used has also a quite big influence for example.

I think the most sensible approach is to model as much detail as you need. That depends on how close the user will come to the object for example.

Thanks Arno,

The Amundsen will be landable on rear deck with helicopter, so this portion of the ship has to be very detailed. I need texture only for the hull, front main superstructure and deck, so I think that texture will not be a limitating factor.

"Landable", did I said "landable"...? I am not perfectly bilingual so I dont understood the topic on this subject. Can you please explain how to make a landable helizone. Thanks again.

I am not using FSDS myself, but I am sure one of the FSDS users (Felix maybe :)) can explain you how to do that in the tool.

Hi Folks

jpfil -
There are several posts on making landable surfaces in FSDS.

etc.
Also use the search for "landable".

I have one .bgl file from fsds 3.5 that has over 25,000 vertices and still going strong. I believe that translates into a few thousand polygons.
