• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

I remember using MCX years ago to recover a lost modeldef.xml file from a compiled .mdl file, but now don't remember just how I managed to figure it out finally.

Help an senile old man please? :rotfl:

Bill,

This worked for me.

Import the .mdl file.

Then, open the modeldef file with with the ModelDef.xml editor.

In the ModelDef editor, I don't know what happens if you use any of the Save options at the top of the form. You might want to copy any paste the data elsewhere.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

...10 minutes later...

That worked a treat. Not only the Save work, but also the "Save only used" which greatly reduced the resulting recovered modeldef.xml file!

Now I only have to identify and rename all of the tagged objects so they will match the original .max file for the exterior and interior models.

Oh just LOTS of fun! Moving along now. I'm just thankful that I am so anal about saving stuff. I've found that I can use the last .xanim file and the recovered modeldef.xml file to match up the guids and recover the name in the .max file. The remaining issue is recreating the mouse rect names and the viz tag names. For that I have to check in the .max file and read the properties information, then match it up to the new modeldef.xml file's entries... Whew!
