The FS2002/FS9/FSX series has been succesful because beginning flight simmers could just start out with a mouse and keyboard, purchasing add-on aircraft, software and hardware as they progressed and as their flight sim needs saw fit. This, in turn, made for a large market for FS add-ons, and because of that availability of add-on content, FS9 and FSX sales perpetuated, FS9 now literally going for a decade.
Wow, I can't believe I missed that comment!
Way to go third party
payware developers!
Of course the several terrabytes of
freeware at Avsim, Flightsim.com, Simviation, et al for Microsoft flightsim platforms developed with the same Microsoft SDKs used by payware developers had no influence on the popularity of Flight Simulator XX over the years. The pioneers of flightsim addons, some of whom founded this website, were, and continue to be,
freeware developers.
Now that the third party payware developers have shown Microsoft the error of their ways, addon development for future flightsims may have become a thing of the past.
I'm glad that Microsoft developed Flight Simulator XX and made the SDKs available to the community, and I'm glad that FSDeveloper.com still hosts freeware development tools for the flightsim community, and I'm glad there are still plenty of freeware developers to stimulate sales of Microsoft Flight Simulator XX for years to come.

As for the dots ... well, as with most things, we see what we want to see.
Isn't that why you assumed all along that Microsoft would continue to present third party developers a Flight! SDK on a silver platter?
And, if Microsoft had made it clear during their information gathering program that there would be no SDK this time around, would payware developers have refused to participate?
Seriously?
After all that Microsoft has done to develop the flightsim platforms and SDKs payware developers used to make money off of the flightsim community?
Even though Microsoft first gave, and now Microsoft has taken away, the third party payware developers still have their Microsoft Flight Simulator XX golden geese to continue to make money with, so how's about they do a little less biting of the hand that continues to feed them, and simply wish Microsoft the best of luck with their new project?
