• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Mirror inverted my objects

Hi all,

I create a simple little plane (actually lots of them), it's yellow and used as runway edge markings. Since I needed left and right side I did a Mirror/Copy and ended up with what I expected...at least in Gmax.

The said objects (mirrored/copied) end up being upside down in FS.

What did I do wrong and what do I do to fix the problem?

Thanks

Hi Patrick,

That's a well known issue with GMax and the gamepack. Never, never, never (did I say never?) use the mirror modifier from the toolbar. It will break your object. You need to use the mirror modifier from the menu.

Humm, that is weird. The menu modifier should work fine and then the output should be the same as you see in GMax. You did not use the mirror button by accident in the past on this object?

Well Arno, reading your previous post I asked myself the question as it is very easy to do it as a reflex. Therefor I will delete all the messed up objects and will try recreating them just to make sure I indeed didn't use the button instead of the menu.

I will update the post when done.

I created a new file, new test object, a simple square pane.
Exported it, it shows normally in Gmax and in FS

Mirror/copied it through the menu
Attached the copy to the original
Exported it
It shows normally in Gmax but in FS it shows with color under the object (inverted).

There is your problem. Don't use the "Menu" or the toolbar Icon!

  1. Select object
  2. Clone object
  3. Select Clone
  4. Add a "Mirror" modifier to the stack
  5. Convert to E-Poly

Geez, is there ANYTHING that works properly in that program
Distributing free garbage is NOT a good way of advertising for a company.

The problem isn't the program; the problem is incorrect user expectations.

The "Mirror" icon tool does work precisely as it is supposed to work. It isn't "broken."

The problem is that what it does do is not what you "want" it to do, or "think" it should do.

For FS9/FSX modeling, we have to use an alternative method via the "mirror modifier."

The only difference between the two different methods is how the vector normals sum together.

With the Mirror Icon Tool the normal vectors sum to -1
With the Mirror Modifier the normal vectors sum to +1

FS9 and FSX both require that the normal vectors sum to +1 only.

You don't need to delete the bad objects! Just create a box or something and attach the bad object to it and then detatch it... For me it worked when I didn't know about the modifier...

Do you mean attaching the bad object to a good one rectifies the situation and makes the bad one a good one...that would be neat?

Bill, obviously you seem to know Gmax in & out and I don't and that gets me frustrated at times :D

Question: a scenery developer was kind enough to share his source files with me so that I could correct minor errors. What is the best way to go about the texture files so that I don't have to remap every object in the library?
Right now I don't have the original textures (which I have requested now), I only have the DXT1 files.

Thanks.

As you might have expected it that worked perfectly. Thanks again for the tip.

Load the DXT1 .bmp files in DXTBMP.exe, then Save As .jpg or .tng files. Use the converted files in GMax's Material Editor. If you've used the same names, they should already show up correctly.

NOTE: If the scenery is FSX native, then you will have to flip the converted files vertically. If the scenery is FS9 native, no flipping is required.
