• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA Multi-Material with FlightSimX material

I am currently working on a scenery project with a few textures. I posted an image of the oil rig example of how they did the materials. It looks like they have added FSX material to a multi-material parent. Is this the best/normal way of doing this? I have been out of the modeling scene for a few years now. :)

I cant for the life of me do this though.. Whenever I add a material it goes in as standard.

The only time you *have* to use a Multi material is when you have more than one texture mapping a single object. If not, using Standard materials is fine, AFAIK.

That's interesting, in gmax when you edit a multimaterial you can only get a standard sub-material when clicking the Add button. It doesn't prompt for a material type.

A workaround might be to create an object with an FSX material and attach it to the rig, then you get an opportunity to merge the materials, so you get a new multi-material with your added FSX material merged in. It should also be possible to make a new FSX material, then drag it onto a subobject selection (eg select some polygons, then drop the new FSX material onto the polygons).

It might be possible to write a scripted plugin to augment the multi-material editor to allow adding FSX materials, but that would need some investigation.

I got a number of multimaterials in my early blunderings in Gmax, usually by merging things. I eventually learned to avoid them and still do consciously avoid them in the interest of keeping things simple. The only one I have a use for is the Harlequin multimaterial used when UVW mapping.
