• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Multi-surface runway

Can I use FX Planner to build multi-surface runways?

The airport I'm building has 2 runways with the beginnings in concrete, the middle section in asphalt.

(or can I texture my runway?)
(I'm using FS X with SP1)

Thanks
Bart

I think that would be very difficult to do properly. If you change the textures for a runway surface type then it will change for all the world. You can't assign a specific texture to a specific runway.

There are a couple of things you could try. first you could make the actual runway surface using textured polygons. You would need to create a runway in FSX Planner that is perhaps very narrow so that it does not show up much. A tools such as SBuilderX or perhaps FSX KML could make the polys for your runway. I have written a couple of tutorials on using textured polys to make runways.

Another thing you could try, would be to make a multi-segmented runway using the xml-style runways.

To do this, you would make one segment of concrete, a middle section of asphalt, and and another segment of concrete.

The negative of that technique would be that in the FS Map display it would show as three runways, albeit very close together.

You would also have to join the runway lines (black lines) or else AI would not use the runway to effect.

It would be worth experimenting. I have not personally ever done this type of experiment. I would be most concerned about how the AI would handle it...if at all.

Obviously, using ground polys as Jon suggests would work also but would be a lot more work.

Not practical to do Mace. Each runway in FS MUST have a different runway number (or number/letter) in order to compile. If you could have 3 runways with 3 different numbers layed end to end then what number do you give the start locations and the runway link line. Start locations are unseen scenery for arrival planes (amoung other code) which is where the FP terminates.

The runway link line is for ground movement of airplanes only. The texture of the XML runway is for airborne planes landing which source a unseen code at their touchdown point.

These runways numbers are processed through the proper dll so ATC does not get confused on which runway is the active for arrivals.
