• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Multiple texture sheets in gMax?

Hi,

I'm trying to make my first ground poly and I'm trying to figure out how to use multiple texture sheets on a single plane. I can texture an object with a single sheet fine, but I don't know how to use multiple. Is there anyone that can point me in the right direction?

Thanks

The simplest way to use multiple texture sheets is to make a Multimaterial.

Press Add until you have the number of slots you need, then add textures to each slot

When appying the materials ALWAYS apply the multimaterial (in fact I delete all others!)

You then tell Gmax which material goes where by setting the material ID.

Don't ever let Gmax assign multimaterials it makes a mess ... take control!

Btw, each polygons can only have one texture assigned. But if you object has multiple polygons, each can have a different texture with the approach given above.

Ok thanks for that guys. I just need to know a couple of things:
I have 6 texture sheets with 3 strips of runway on them, so I divided the length of the runway into 18 sections, and gave them material ID's (18 in total). Would I make a UVW map for every 3 ID's? (Because of there being 3 runway textures per sheet).

Thanks

You really only need an ID for each material (and hence texture sheet)

So in this case 6 MatID's (number of each correlates to the slot number in your multimaterial)

One face can only have a single MatID, however, a single MatID can be applied to multiple faces / polys.

If you unwrap these, you can sequentially select the textue, then select the MatID's to work with in the unwrap window.

Thanks again hcornea, although didn't word it properly. This is the issue I'm having (the second section in the UVW is attached to the end of the first). Here's a pic:

You will need to break the UVW vertex welds ... in fact the simplest way to do this is to

1) Select the Material ID's you want (Polygon, Select by ID on the rollout)
2) Unwrap --> only the verts related to the selected polys will display
3) select the appropriate texture sheet (top right drop-down on the Unwrap window)
4) Unwrap this set of verts as required.

repeat for all the MatiD's

Alternatively you can break the welds on the UVW verts, but then you have to re-weld the ones you want and it really gets rather tedious.

(who would have thought UVmapping could be tedious? :D )

Given that you have two sets of "similar" maps on a runway, you may be able to select appropriate groups of MatIDs and unwrap those together (eg the ones down the bottom half of the texture sheet). Then refine them later.
