• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

My topdown airport image

Status: MSFS2020 1.30.12.0 along with SDK 0.20.5.0.

I used DevMode and the SDK documentation to edit some polys.

I cannot replicate what I saw in tutorials where one opens the scenery editor, and magically, the airport appears in top-down camera mode with the dialog box superimposed on the airfield to allow using the polygon maker.

I cannot get the airport to reappear. I know the (top down camera) airport is there. I can hear the engine and I can turn off DevMode and there it is.

P.S. As an aside the SDK documention does not completely reflect the SDK 0.20.5.0.

Hi John:

I am not aware of a means by which this is possible:

...where one opens the scenery editor, and magically, the airport appears in top-down camera mode with the dialog box superimposed on the airfield to allow using the polygon maker.

Here is the workflow I am aware of in MSFS DevMode GUI:

With DevMode Menu bar visible:

1.) DevMode Menu > Project > Open Project > Browse / Select in Root of Project Folder chain > Phase001.xml

2.) Project Editor Menu > View > check: Inspector

3.) Project Editor dialog > click: willistonsoftware-airport-kbtv-burlington > click: scenery BGL

4.) Inspector dialog > click: [ Load in Editor ] button

5.) DevMode Menu > Camera > check: Developer Camera

6.) Press + Hold (Left) < Alt > key and Press + Hold + Drag Left Mouse Button to Rotate or Tilt

7.) Mouse Wheel = Zoom in / out

8.) < W > key = Forward, < S > key = Backward, < A > key = Left, < D > key = Right

[EDITED]

9.) Press + Hold Middle Mouse Button to Drag Left or Right

10.) Press + Hold Right Mouse Button to Zoom in / out

11.) Scenery Editor dialog > View > check: Objects and Properties and Gizmo

12.) Objects dialog > Top Left Pick-list > Polygon > click: [ Add ] button

13.) Properties dialog > (enter desired Polygon Display Name / functions)

NOTE: Press + Hold (Left) < Ctrl > key and click: Left Mouse Button ...to place Polygon vertex Points

14.) DevMode Menu > Options > Airports > check: Draw Debug

15.) DevMode Menu > Options > Terrain > check: Draw on Terrain and Draw Shapes

NOTE:

DevMode Menu > Camera > check: TopDown Camera ...allows Developer Camera scenery editing options

DevMode Menu > Camera > check: Developer Camera ...allows Scenery Editing

In Developer Camera mode, one may Drag down to Tilt view ...for a TopDown Camera equivalent

UPDATE
: (Verified this morning and I had overlooked mentioning DevMode Menu > Options feature check-marks)

PS: For maximum accuracy in run time rendering of Terrain : (Land and Water)

DevMode Menu > Options > Ground > check: Enable Terraforming and Old Terraforming Method

DevMode Menu > Options > Ground > un-check: Enable Water Flattening and Detail Maps

< ESC > key > Graphics Menu > Terrain Level of Detail: [ 400 ]

I switched to Developer Camera but that did not get it done. Something in my scenery editor? is not right. I will try Theston's tutorial with Developer camera and report back.

Update: Unsuccessful either way. Do you have time to download and try my zip file? It will tell me whether I need to do a clean re-install (or hopefully not).

Hi John:

I was able to open your project normally; no need to do a clean re-install or start that project over, IMHO.

I see no structural or functional issues with it so far, by loading it in Scenery Editor, and Adding a Polygon.

I have saved no changes to it yet.

BTW: Does your Windows Desktop screen resolution match the requested resolution in MSFS ?

< ESC > key > Graphics Menu > Full Screen Resolution: [ use same value as Windows Desktop ]

PS: Do you use multiple monitors which are toggled on / off intermittently ? :scratchch

I am 1920 by 1080 single monitor. I suspect there is a setting which sets and locks my DevMode dialog boxes to cover my entire screen, and that may be the whole explanation.

Indeed, if we drag the DevMode dialog boxes too far up onto / over the icon toolbar near the top of MSFS' window, those dialogs will auto-expand to full screen; this is a real P.I.T.A. part of the SDK GUI.

The fix is to pull the dialog(s) back down under that icon toolbar, then re-size them smaller, by dragging the edges of the dialogs and/or using the bottom right corner blue triangle "handle".

John that is a nice looking airport, beautiful detail. I feel like Gary might not get enough credit for his efforts.

Just look at that, it looks like scoring for a symphony, or something, maybe plotting a FalconX launch. I have to confess, I'll make you a nice airport to enjoy, but Gary invests.
👍

Nice to know my investment of time yields 'interest' sufficient to evoke kind words on occasion. :)

The step-by-step guide above was more concise than my other earlier prototypes over the years.

Some of my prior endeavors have used far more text and images than one might prefer.

I am appreciative of the efforts of others in recent years to author tutorial videos, but most are too low in resolution, or have been too compressed, for legibility ...even on a 4K monitor.

I have seen some animated GIF 'video' tutorials at the Sketchucation forums that were quite legible, and I wonder if that type of resource may also prove useful here at FSDev, but I am concerned that they may require too much storage space on the forum hosting platform.

So, for the immediate future I shall try to utilize the more compact format I implemented above, when posting mini- (or maxi-) tutorials.

Sadly, after successfully using the SDK a few times this AM, I got as far as the Blackshark.ai and the simulator stops and I am so so done with this stuff for now. Somehow, I may have corrupted something but using the SDK shouldn't have done anything to prevent a complete boot up now.
Hi John. What was the fix?
I was not managing my SDK screens, one of which took up the whole screen. Rookie mistake. GaryGB realized my problem.

As an aside I was running my system with most features maxed out, and was getting 28-30 fps with my Ryzen 6600 and DirectX12 earlier this AM. I was happy.

I had just finished using the airport wizard, and noted that the project software produced was not exactly the same as the sample software that came with the SDK.
Would you delete the program, and download it again?

Reading the official website and watching people grope around for an answer in that CTD hot mess is not my cup of tea.

Well I just got my sim back by going to going to settings, advanced Settings, repair and reset. I hope you get lucky here

I get CTDs off and on while in DevelopMode. I'm used to it by now.
