• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Need help Starting w/ mission making.

Hi,

I don't know why the link I included in my original post is not working, it always has before. That's not the point however.
I think I identified a possible source of confusion. Here's an snippet from the Troubleshooting section:
"Only use this troubleshooting supplement -
IF you've already completed the actions in SDK_Installation_(FSX)
AND its still not working for you, (e.g. In-Game tools are missing)."
The phrase "its still not" (sic) indicates that it should be working at this point, having only followed the preceding instructions. That's absolute garbage as there has been no mention of editing the xml.dll. Without this editing, of course, the tool will not be available.

Actually Jim, that's not entirely true. Assuming one has -in fact- installed the SDK to the default paths (or updated via ConfigSDK.exe), the active dll.xml file should have been automatically updated and configured to launch the tools in the sim for you.

IOW, one should only have a problem if they skipped a step somewhere along the convoluted process... ;)

Hey Bill,

Very interesting. I originally bought the standard version of FSX. I had previously purchased the "Professional" version of FS2000 and and was hesitant about buying any Deluxe version of FS. Once burned. Anyway, I quickly regretted my decision after reading in the forums about the additional capabilities, especially regarding missions. When Gold was released I decided it was time. Having read the problems in the forums regarding getting the OPT working I was very careful about installation. I was as much interested in where the problem lie as with the installation itself. I installed the SDK per the included instructions and when I went into FSX I had no "Tools". I then modified the XML.dll per the Mission Creation section. Tools appeared. Everything went as I expected.
On my system the modification to the XML.dll was not automatic. There must be some anomaly. I'm using XP home and I made sure it was up to date prior to installation. All installation was done to the default paths. The XML.dll file was where it should be but the OPT was not enabled.

Edit: After I posted I had the thought that perhaps "Tools" appeared, but I distinctly recall having to edit the XML.dll to enable OPT as a selection.

thats because the tools tab fsx. will supply you with the tools you decide you need...by enabling some or all in the dll...or by turning off the ones you dont need...jim

ps....hot tips....if your using for the first time the opt can be frustrating and counterintuitive......alt enter. to switch to windowed mode....you need to move the opt
of to one side,so you can see what your aiming at...be carefull not to move it off screen...its a heck of a job to get it back.....2 screens can be made to work..
the sdk document for mission developement is very good.....some objects are area specific....objects only appear in missions...but its not difficult to use the opt to place objects outside of missions..in addon scenery.....jim
