• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA New 3D Grass technique??

Hi Developers, :)

3D Grass techniques have been developed a lot since the grass now looks extremely realistic in some sceneries. There are some common ways and ideas that most developers use, like the first/original idea which is based on duplicating grass layers and raise them a little bit. This idea is Copyright Lars (29Palms) BTW!
However I think that those ways turned very old since we see now very awesome looking 3D Grass, like this one by ORBX: :D

Great grass, isn't it?? :D

Anyways, so my question is the title itself! Is there any new way/technique to make awesome 3D Grass which looks much real/better like in the photos that I attached earlier?? :scratchch

Thank you in advance! ;)

I like the image of the portable - single wide really, with the typically raggedly overgrown lawn and front walkway and the otherwise perfect umbrellas on the deck, the guy on the - what is that, a laptop? would have had to wade through the grass to put those shades up. Omg guy, get up off your flight simulator and go mow the lawn!

Lol :rotfl:
I'm really impressed too... I'm wondering how they did it!!!!!! Any ideas please? :stirthepo

Hi William:

Google is your friend (sometimes):

https://www.google.com/#q=site:www.fsdeveloper.com+3D+grass

I believe you will find that the grass objects at the above airport in question are the more commonly seen "2D sprites" with Alpha channel transparency made of double-sided, cloned and rotated copies of that textured 2-sided sprite plane intersecting the original, located at varying positions in several multiple-object MDLs. ;)

The visual quality and the size of the grass blades in the texture images can also make such objects look better when rendered in FS at run time.

Yeah, you can see exaples of this on turbosquid. Or You can buy their scenery and look at the textures to figure it out.

I tried the layer method, followed by the other method. Liked the second sooo much better!

I know the grass looks a bit exaggerated, but its not. They barely ever mow the grass at CPX!

I didn't understand  Could you please explain more please ... What do you mean by "exaples"?

Your grass look great! Looks amazing! :) BTW: can you tell me where do you get such a nice 3d grass texture? I searched on this before on Google Images and www.textures.com but nothing found. I just found 2D seamless grass textures (Captured from the top)
Any help would be great!

Thank you so much for the replies! And sorry for the late reply! :)

Russ I did google them, do Grass Texture and then select the "Tall" group...plenty to choose from. Do note that I don't use them directly from Google, I do a lot of transparency editing with Photoshop, but you get the idea. Combine images, adjust height, etc....

Yes, I like the second one too.
But it is quite a lot of work too, isn't it?

Hi Tic,

Not really. I must say you need to have a nicely "dotted" alpha channel, and some experimentation with distance between transparency planes and offset. I got something pretty decent on first attempt.

My best advise, just try it.
