• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

New FSX scenery design tool using Google Earth

Hi, what texture can I use to get Water for a lake?
Thanks

In FSX vector terrain you don't specify a texture directly - types of polygons are defined in terrain.cfg, as well as their textures (incl seasonal variations, flattening, drawing priority etc.).
Using TMFviewer I found that the rivers and lakes where I live are drawn with type Hydro_Polygons_Generic_River_Perennial (guid starting with E5DD8B66...). Don't know if other hydro types will yield different results. Water color will depend on water classes defined in worldwc.bgl, at least for this case.
If you're not sure go for Hydro_Polygons_Generic_River_Perennial, I did it and I am happy with the results.

Dear All:

Is there a way to define the Streams width?

With roads i can assign the number of lanes but in streams i don't know what will be the width...

Please, advice.

Thanks.

Using the stock types defined in terrain.cfg, you can't.
The default 'streams' type is meant for very small streams - it will generate a "line" with a width of 64 meters, but that's the width of the texture that will be repeated along this "line" (a widthed line, actually). The texture depicts a very small stream with lots of very tight bends. Even if you draw a simple straight line, that's what you'll get.
If the river you intend to draw has any visible width in an ordinary 30m resolution satellite photo (like those in low-res areas of Google Earth, or in Nasa Worldwind) I'd recommend going into polygons. You would probably need lots of work to get altitudes and slopes correctly, but I'd still go for it.
That's how it is done in most of the default scenery for US, Europe and Japan, where there's better vector data available.

Hi all.

There is a texture that is mesh-clinging:

// Legacy_LandWaterMask_Water_NoFlatten
[Texture.381]
Name=Legacy_LandWaterMask_Water_NoFlatten
Color=FF638AC2
guid={5835459A-4B8B-41F2-ADC1-DEE721573B28}
Textures=OCEAN_SEA_LARGE_LAKE
FlattenMode=none
LandClassRemapType=none
ExcludeAutogen=Yes
RenderToTexture=Yes
RenderPriority=80000
Water=Yes

With the altered terrain.cfg file Luis and I are promoting, the rock slopes will be removed. Then there would be no need to worry about altitudes and slopes. If the mesh and the source images are good, the water polys should fall correctly on the mesh.

Legacy_LandWaterMask_Water_NoFlatten

Dear Dick:

Do I need the modified terrain.cfg file to use the tag Legacy_LandWaterMask_Water_NoFlatten?

I think that to distribute a modified terrain.cfg can generate problems if different scenery designer has its own terrain.cfg files. (We need a standard)

If i want to use a polygon with elevation i want to understand how to use slope polygons.

What does mean Slope X Slope y?

Is there a basic example?

Thanks,

Alfredo, you don't necessarily need the modified terrain.cfg. The only difference if ou don't use it is that when the water surface has a slope above a certain threshold, it will appear as rocky, like mountains.
To use sloped polygons right now you would need to edit the dbf file manually, as FSXKML currently (as of v 1.03) does not provide this functionality.
More info about slope in this thread: http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3383

As you will have seen, this tool has its own subforum now. So may I ask everybody to post new questions as a new thread, instead of using this single thread for all problems? That makes things a lot easier to follow :).

Stream line too thin

Dear All:

// Stream Lines - stream lines / unknown / perennial
[Texture.0]
Name=Stream_Lines_Perennial
Color=FF01A2FF
guid={2D3FC985-A72B-473D-B23B-D78E72E63B53}
LegacyId=1024
Textures=RiverSU.bmp
Layout=3_PLUS_1
StripWidthMeters=64
Size=4
FlattenMode=offset
FlattenOffsetMeters=-1
FlattenPriority=11000
LandClassRemapType=none
ExcludeAutogen=Yes
RenderToTexture=Yes
RenderPriority=51000
Water=No

The stream lines should have 64 meters wide, but in FSX it just has 10 meters.

Furthermore i see the FlattenOffsetMeters=-1 not in the streamline center.

Look the following picture.

Thanks.

Shape Geographic Coordinate System

Dear Mathew:

When i open the shape file generated by FSX_KML in Esri ArcMap, i see that that coordinate system is wrong see the picture.

I think that the coordinate system must be WGS84.

I can read the shape file and see the polygon, but i don't understand why the shape file has the NA1927 projection instead of WS84, i can change the projection to WGS84 ....

Thanks,

Shapefiles do not carry the information specifying a projection. In fact, one can work with maps in any arbitrary coordinate system.
For ArcGIS (and any other GIS or mapping application) to understand what the coordinates specified in the shapefile means, there must be an corresponding .PRJ file, which is a small ASCII text file specifying projection and datums.
What's happening here is that your installation of ArcGIS is set up in a way to understand shapefiles w/o .PRJ files as being in lat/lon coordinates with NAD27 datum.

By the way, Google Earth uses WGS84 as well, so no transformation is needed and coordinates can be directly used in FS.

Sparse Atogen in park polygon

Dear Mathew:

The defualt scenery has a dense autogen (LandClass), but when i install my scenery that includes a park polygon with the tag = LandClassPoly_Large_City_Urban_Grid_Dry

I see a sparse autogen.

I placed a desert landclass under the park polygon.

Thanks.

Sparse Autogen Solved

Dear Mattew:

The autogen was exluded by an old bgl exclude for airport...

Arno i fully agree with you!
I am quite new in this forum, but i spend rather long times here in finding the right items/threads.
It is one of the most difficult forums in this respect.
But i like to come here and learn, that is for shure.

Fsxkml

Hi all

I tried the programme of Matthews and works like a charm, even if it is a beta........version......I just wish to attach the pix of Candia Lake , near Ivrea in Italy, now present in its correct shape in FSX.
Thx a lot and wish all of you Happy Holidays.

Ciao

Fsx Kml, French Guiana Mesh

Hello Mathews, first of all thank you so much for this soft!

I'm also looking for the traffic tag to put in the polyline as mentioned in the Tutorial. I didn't find any in the FSX KML tag list. There only an exclude Freeway Traffic tag.

Can you please help me ?

Thanks!

Hi I want to com back to a further problem in this tread, did somebody solve the problem with excluding traffic? Where can I find all GUID ID`s for the exclude tags? They are not located in terrain.cfg?
