• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Night map during the day?

Is it anyhow possible to make an GMAX model use it's night map all the time?
I would like to make taxi lights as scenery object coated with a light texture and then tweak the code to make it appear only at night/dusk/dawn.
The problem is that during the dusk/dawn period the light texture isn't used, so my light only looks bright during night.
Thank you in advanced,
Nikola

Hi,
I'm not sure I understand.
May be you should select your night texture both for diffuse and ambiant maps ?

The thing I wanted to ask is:

Is it possible to have a texture looking like a light at Dawn/Dusk?

My papi lights are not visible from distance, so I want to use a texture that represents a light and can be seen from farther away. The problem is that they don't look bright at Dawn and Dusk, but at Night they look like lights because I use *_lm.bmp

Thank you.

You don't say if this is for FSX or FS9 but if it's FSX,

Open your model(s) in Gmax.

In the Material Editor under Maps -> Flight Simulator Extended Parameters

Look for the "Emissive Properties" section.

Change from AdditiveNightOnly to either Blend or Additive.

"Blend" may be what you are looking for. This will cause the night texture to fade in gradually during dusk and dawn (as apposed to waiting until it's completely dark).

"Additive" will cause the night texture to be visible all the time (even in daylight).

See the "FSX Materials" section in the SDK (hold you mouse over the relevant section of the image of the Gmax Material Editor properties at the beginning of the document)

Michael, are you sure this works for scenery objects?

My experiment with blend and additive didn't seem to demonstrate much difference - and I had assumed they only worked for cockpit/VC textures

It does work for Scenery objects as well as cockpit/gauge textures in FSX. But we now see Asasino is designing for FS9.

Well, it was marked on the original message in the upper right corner: "FS Version: FS2004"

I guess we all need to start looking there... ;)

You're right, Bill.

I have never even noticed that option before. I will definitely start paying attention to that (Sorry I didn't notice, Nikola).

...good timing. I was just about to make a request for such an option to be added to the forum. Now I don't have to look like an idiot. :)

So now I would like to suggest that checking one of those options be mandatory when posting (even if it's the N/A option).

I've tried to help people a couple of times this week only to find they were designing for FS9, which I don't do.

-Michael.
