• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Hi All,

I have read the amazing tutorial on how to create a night texture,

Just one slight problem, i am using adobe photoshop 7 and are unable to locate the day/night setting and also the light's setting!

Could somebody please enlighten me!

Piran,

There is no "Day/Night" setting in Photoshop. What you would do is make a copy of your normal(daytime) texture, rename it to something appropriate and then use the "Brightness" option in Photoshop to darken the image.

On the main menu, click on Image -> Adjustments -> Brightness/Contrast

and reduce the overall brightness of the image to your liking.

To add lighting effects, go to: Filter -> Render -> Light Effects.

Just play around with it.

The general naming convention is to keep the same name as your
Diffuse texture and append an _LM extension ("LM" stands for Light Map").

So.. Diffuse texture = Mybuilding.bmp
Ambient texture = Mybuilding_LM.bmp

The name doesn't matter at all in FSX. I can't remember if the "_LM" is required in FS9 or not (but I don't think so). So you could just as easily name it "Mybuilding_Night.bmp"

Sorry, to be a pain, But when you save the image file,

what do you need to save it as, At present it isn't showing in fs, i believe this is due to the image format. I have saved a s a .bmp then as a dxt1!

is this correct?

Hi FOlks

Piran -
Ensure the name matches what the model is expecting.

If the model doesn't call a night texture,
then your night texture will never show.

For info on texture types
please see the Wiki - Texture - Formats (Overview)

Piran,

You are not alone. I had exactly the same problem with night textures. It has nothing to do with texture format or naming, it is that FSX needs an almost black unlit texture and a very bright lit area:

Did you assign it in GMAX? If not, it goes under the Ambient button.

Ok............

So when i do that it applies that texture.

Is that normal.

i applied the night texture via your previous post, by the "Self-Illumination" tool, is the texture supposed to be applied to the model in GMAX like in my piccy?
