• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 NZKI - Kaikoura (released)

Hi everyone,

I made some progress with my Kaikoura airport project. The whole thing is taking considerably longer than I expected, mainly due to my inexperience with the SDK. I also realized that some of my models looked good in Blender but terrible in-sim, with exaggerated reflections and strange behaviour under certain lighting conditions. I also accidently mixed OpenGL and DirectX style normal maps, all of which lead me to retexture many of my models. I also had to create custom models for minor scenery elements like fences or markers, because the default ones I originally intended to use looked odd and out of place in the scenery.
I finally decided to release the scenery on a set date - March the 6th, 2021, which will be my 42nd Birthday ;-). I consider this release to be a "Version 0.9", until then I will have created all the basic assets to make a functioning airport scenery. But I intend to revisit this scenery in the near future and add some more custom models, fix some graphical issues and overall improve texturing and lighting of the airport. In a third step I want to also improve the surrounding area, mainly the Kaikoura peninsula region, but I need to learn to implement custom aerial imagery for that because Bing maps looks terrible in this region.

So, here are my first shots. Hope you enjoy.

This looks fantastic! Very detailed and neatly worked. I think this will be a real highlight scenery.

Thanks, everyone. Manfred, maybe I could use your help further down the road. When I'm content with the way the airport looks I want to include some AI marine traffic along the Kaikoura coastline and I know that you're one of the experts on AI ship traffic.

Well, I'm just starting to get into design in MSFS. But I know from Henrik Nielsen that there are still various problems with the ship traffic (textures and effects) in MSFS. It is possible to run ships in "compatibility mode" but it doesn't look that great.
Let's see when you are ready with your scenery and how far I am then with the ships. Then we can see further.

Just wanted to inform everyone that I just uploaded the scenery to flightsim.to. Some final screenshots attached.
